This weeks news letter posted below -but
I took a weekend off and got back to the Basics last weekend. What are the basics (?) -- same as always----hot cars, pretty girls, good beer and brats. Around here, you can get it all at Road America-- GT-1 Corvettes, 700 hp Nascar stockers, warm summer day with beautful scenery of the 4 mi road course, and the best beer and Brats Wisc has to offer.
Sorry I missed the match.

The Week Ahead - Shooters news June 23, 2010
The State Highpower Championships are this weekend. Two days of Over the Course Highpower matches to be held at Elk River Sportsman's Club. Saturday is the 4 man Team match - 80 shots per shooter. Then on Sunday it will be the individual Matches for State Champion. This is a combined Match rifle and Service rifle State Championship. I'm leaning toward shooting Service Rifle in the individual matches Sunday. I might have a chance to win Senior Service Rifle Champ. if I can get a point more than Capt Bob, and besides I have to defend last years title, that Bob and I have traded off a couple times.
This from Capt. Bob
"The NRA championship is this coming weekend at Elk River with an 80 shot team match Saturday. The Marine Corps Reserves will have a team here for what ever that's worth to you. There are at least 4 other team entries in already. If you would like to shoot on a team but do not have 3 others let me know. I'll try to get you together with 3 other guys for a pick up team.
Also be advised there will be a Bar B Q Sat. after the team match. Shooting should be done by 4 to 415 with 4 relays.
Also be advised the line officers will be requiring & reminding you to have known zeros for each distance. ..."

Long range shooters continue at Lodi with the Midwest Palma Matches all this week. I'll try to get some news on that as soon as possible. I do know that my good friend from Phoenix, Doug Frerich got the win in today's (Tuesdays) match -- good shooting Doug! Other local shooters participating in these matches, and expected to do well, are John Andres, Morgan Dietrich, Bill Lair, Bob Meade, Steve Knutson, Stacey Tamulinas. Good Luck, Guys!
Following the Palma matches conclusion on Friday, Long Range shooters that haven't gotten had quite enough fun yet can stay at Lodi for Saturday's and Sunday's Wisconsin Long Range State champ matches. match program -- click here

"The June 20th Mpls Rifle Club 1600 Smallbore match
The 2nd 1600 in M.R.C.’s summer series of one day prone matches, saw 10 shooters fire the match, with Junior Shooters out numbering the adults 6 to 4 on this particular day. The days conditions were not bad for shooting good scores, winds were for the most part manageable, although occasionally could sneak up and get shooters if ones attention to the stronger breezes slipped. In the end Ross Ewert came out Match Winner posting an impressive 1591-108X, with
two 200’s along the way, one 200-15X in the 50 yard match, and one 200-15X in the 100 yard match. Following Ross in the standings were Junior Shooter Alex
Giesar posting a 1574-78X winning the Junior Category , followed by Jim Biles
just a point behind him at 1573-73X for 3rd overall.
Up and coming Sub-Junior shooters with bright futures Eric Hazelton
and Samuel Ewert battled it out all day through all the matches just a point or
two between them in each match with Eric narrowly edging out Samuel in the end
by only six points 1539 to 1533. It was encouraging to see the strong junior turnout for the match,
and are looking for an increasing adult turnout for the next 1600 Course coming
up on Sunday July 18th. Adult shooters have several Junior class shooters
closing the talent gap quickly in the smallbore prone game."

Ross Ewert's 1591 with 108 Xs is an outstanding score for an Expert Class shooter. If he keeps that up, I hope he is going to the Nationals this summer. It's good to see Jim Biles out at a match. I am looking forward to getting to that July 18th match.

From Kurt Borlaug:
" I have been approached by a several sling shooters about the potential for a 1k/Palma League for next year. The interest is growing in LR and many of the SR guys are willing to give it a run and many have purchased appropriate iron for the game. I believe this from the natural urge to try something new, while still competing in OTC.
It would be for STRICTLY SLING SHOOTERS ONLY!! I'm envisioning a bi-monthly type thing with hopefully a mix of Palma and 1k.....or mostly 1k.
It's a shame that our range is so under-utilized past 600 yards. Any thoughts for this please let me know, maybe it will be more successful than my attempt at the HP Prone league. Having said all that, up front I have my hands full and would need someone to belly up to take care of the paperwork/ $ collecting/etc. ...."

The Week Ahead -- Shooters news for MN Area June 15th 2010
The Week Ahead -- Shooters News 6/15/10
This week Capt. Bob Peasley will be heading off early to Wisconsin's Lodi long range shooting facility. He has been invited to shoot and wind coach at a US Veteran's Team training session to be held prior to the regular Long Range matches. Bob has told me that he will try to write a rpt on that training session for next week's newsletter.
This coming weekend there will be Small Bore matches for all prone shooters to participate in. Mpls Rifle Club is hosting the 2nd in their summer series of Outdoor prone 1600s on Sunday the 20th. Last month's Regional (1600) had the best turnout for a long time and its good to see these great shooting matches well attended. I think that there are more highpower shooters attending as it is well known that Small bore is great practice for highpower. If you are a highpower shooter and you are losing too many pts at the 600yd line, these 1600s are the best way to practice that prone position, sight alignment, and trigger squeeze. click here for program
Highpower shooters can travel down the beautiful Mississippi River to the Lacrosse Rifle Club and shoot mid-range prone matches both Saturday and Sunday June 19th and 20th--and get tuned up for the marathon of the Lodi Palma matches and Long Range Champ that start on the Monday just after the smoke clears from the Lacrosse matches.
Long Range Prone shooters are gathering to migrate to Lodi Wisc starting on June 21 for 7 days Palma and 1000yd shooting matches that make up the very popular Midwest Palma and Wisc. Long Range Championship week. These matches have become a magnet for LR shooters all over the country as the shooting is well attended by top rank shooters, and therefore very competitive. The matches are well run and give the shooter a chance to fire an entire match daily for 7 consecutive days---which is more Long Range shooting than you get at the Nationals. Last Weekend
last weekend was my annual June weekend up at NWGC shooting their 3 day, 240 shot OTC matches Fri, through Sunday. This year I could shoot only Sat and Sunday so I missed being rained out Friday and headed up Saturday at 0530hrs. It was already light as I passed Forest Lake and looking like one of those all day rains, but I had a room at the Inn and if the match was again rained out, I knew that a good time sitting around the Barbeque would take its place, and make it worth the trip. The weather was forecast for no rain on Sunday.
Saturday, when I pulled into the parking area behind the 200 yd line I saw there were a lot of cars, so good, it would be a good match. The conditions were good and bad. Bad was the light--heavy overcast--The day was sorta dark. Good was the lack of wind. I mean not a ripple on the lake and not a Trembling Aspen leaf trembling. I was 1st Relay, so good, no wind for offhand, but this was first match with space gun for a few months and no practice off hand. Well some days things just go well and I had a 98 on first string of standing before getting back to reality for the 2nd ten shots. Kevin Bangen won that match with 191 and Bob Woods just back with a 190. In the 200 rapid match Sam Gottlieb fired a 199-8x and Matt Griffin a 197-9x, great scores, but not good enough as Kevin posted a 199-10x. Moving back to the 300 yd line for that rapid fire match, the wind was still not a factor. Now it was David Salo's turn to challange Kevin and he fired a solid 199-8x, Good enough for only 2nd place as Kevin fired clean 200-10x---yes half x's again ! The 500 yd match started good for me-- 2 sighters and first 10 shots were all 10s and Xs. Too good to continue--shot 11 was a 9 and then the killer---a crossfire 10 for shot 18---arrrg! Dale Wickstrom overcame the low light conditions and fired a 198-8 on that difficult minute-of-angle target, winning that match over Mark Rohrman's 197-7 and Dave Salo, Kevin, Sam Gottlieb, and Omer Hamers all with 196s.
Kevin Bangen wins the Days agg score with a 786-33, but not far behind was Dave Salo with a 777 and Sam Gottlieb with 776.
After the match, the Group repaired to the camp ground and SB Range Bldg for some cold refreshments, and a barbeque, courtesey of NWGC. The brats and the GrainBelt were fantastic. For some, the gathering lasted well into the night.
Sunday was forecast for a better day, but it looked about the same rainy, misty, dark day was in store for us as yesterday. It wasn't raining, so Steve Billmeir got the match started on time at 0900, and Kevin Bangen started winning on the first shot. Kevin shot an awsome 195 in the standing match. Only Omer Hamer came close with his 190 standing score. It was in this match that Larry Weidell won the "Death Sprial" award for his 2nd string of off-hand. Kevin led the day by 5 pts going into the Sitting Rapid fire match. Yours truley was able to give Kevin a run for his money in that match, shooting a 199-7x, and Matt Griffing shooting an even better 199-12 x put some pressure on Kevin, but when you shoot a clean 200 you don't have to worry about a little pressure from behind.
Sam Gottlieb wins the 300yd Rapid fire match. While Kevin fired a good 199-12x, Sam shot a clean 200 -8x. Points are worth more than Xs.
At the 500 yd line I was really dialed in and shot 10, X for sighters and then 7 Xs in a row on the way to another clean first string at that yard line. Then nines and worse put me out of the running, and Omer Hamer showed us what he could do and put a hard fought 199-11x on the board to win that Match.
Kevin Bangen didn't win every match of the day, but he did put an awesome score of 792-36x on the board and win the day. I think that is the highest score that I can ever remember being shot at a Highpower OTC match around here. Awesome shooting !
1st High Master -- Omer Hamer -- 1555-45
1st Master -- Sam Gottleib -- 1548-43x
1st Expert -- Mark Rohrman -- 1479-26

Well--- it was a great weekend. Lots of good shooting up North, where you can smell the pine trees. Hats off to Elliot, Wick, and the Guys for all the Range improvements constantly being made to NWGC and the tip-top shape the range was in for the matches. The 300m Match at MRC
From Brian Shiffman
"What a nice day for shooting. Some overcast which eventually gave way to sunshine but only a hint of wind. The wind was enough to bite you if you were not paying attention. The correction was not much but enough if you were going for a top score. You still had to keep your guard up.
We had 5 people shooting 3 position. Erhard won the class in spite of penalties assessed for two cross fires He closed out with a higher score for standing than for prone. Jeramy Harrison with an AR15 came in second only 6 points behind Erhard. Of course, without the crossfires it would not be so close.
There were three of us shooting prone class. Chuck Diehl easily won the class even though there were some choice words coming from him at times. You would have thought he was trailing us all. He must have had a bad day all around. Russ Siakel, with an AR15 and battle sights shot a respectable 494, but being consistent through the match series. He has some things to take care of and he’ll be a lot better. I did my prone thing; brilliant at times and shotgun patterns at others. At one point I had a string of five consecutive 9.9’s. Oh I did have a few 10’s and x’s but too many 6, 7 and 8’s. I thought my sight alignment and sight picture was really good and I was stable with good trigger release and follow-through. I called a lot of 10’s that turned out to be anything but. I thought my sights were loose and checked all the screws. I had a group of shots right below the 10 ring, so I adjusted one click up and promptly put a shot at 12 O’clock in the 7 ring. One click down and I’m back just below the 10 ring. I might have to go back to my reloading analysis and work up another load. Oh, woe is me, woe is me J
The two F-Class shooters were Robert Smith and Garold Jones. Robert had a scope suitable for star gazing. Conditions were good in that there was little mirage. But, Robert was really on his game. He dropped only 1 point from a perfect 600. Garold shot a respectable 588. As he said to me, “trigger time.”

The Week Ahead for Shooters -- June 8th
Over the Course (OTC) shooters will be heading north to NorthWestern Gun Club this coming weekend to participate in the Triple Header of OTC matches happening there June 11, 12, and 13th. That's right--Three days of 80 shot OTC matches just 2 1/2 hrs north on the shore of Hunter Lake at one of MN's nicest rifle ranges. Getting on the road by 0530 in White bear Lake gets me there in plenty of time to sign in. Nice camping facilities are availiable and there are usually post match get together's to wet one's whistle and discuss the days shooting. I find that the Americ Inn in Cloquet is the best place for me to get a comfortable nights rest. One day or Three days- come up and shoot. Slide show of last years match -- click here --

In two weeks I'll be making my annual trip to Duluth to shoot in the 3 days of Over the Course matches put on by the Northwestern Gun Club on Hunter Lake. I have always said that these matches were the highlight of my summer shooting season. I just like shooting at the NWGC range and with that group of folks up there. It's an easy 2 1/2 hr drive and you can shoot one day or all three days like I try to do. Motels are near by, and excellent camping facilities are available at the range-- indoor space, shower, kitchen, etc. Don't miss the best matches of the year --

Pictures and Final Results from Sm Bore Regional
Small Bore
The Small Bore Regional at MRC had the biggest turnout in years. 2 relays were needed. Shooters enjoyed a beautiful warm summer day today firing 4 matches of 40 shots ea prone. Temperature was perfect, wind was manageable.
10 sub juniors contested the match and showed the progress of Junior teams fielded by Larry Sawyer, and Bruce Blahut.
Small Bore Regional -- Day one -- Iron Sights
Ross Ewert, Larry Sawyer and Emily Quinar (just back from Murray State College for the summer) started off in the lead by shooting clean 400 scores in the 50 yd match. Ross Ewert won the Dewar match by an X over Steve Kuntson, both shooting 397s and leaving Ross 1pt up on the group after half way. Emily and Larry were now a pt down, having shot 396's. Stacey Tamulinas, an unclassified master, fired a very good 395, showing what a few years of Palma Training will do for a prone shooter. Only Larry S. really mastered the switching wind in the 100yd match, dropping only 3 for a 397 and pulling away from the other contenders who all lost 9-13 pts in that match and started fading away on the Score board. The last cards were shot at 50 meters on that very difficult target, and Larry ensured the days the win with a 398/400, 4pts above the best efforts of Steve Knutson and Stacey Tamulinas -- 394 each.
Congratulations to Larry Sawyer for winning the Iron Sight match of this regional.
Small Bore regional Day Two -- Any Sights
Larry Sawyer took no prisoners in day 2 of this regional. He fired Clean scores of 400 out of a possible 400 in the first 3 matches, putting him far enough ahead so that slipping a little in the last match and losing 9 pts there, to Steve Knutson's almost perfect 399-34x, did not cost him the Win. It was close with final scores having Larry at 1593, Steve Knutson at 1591, and Expert Class winner Ross Ewert right behind with a 1590. That's great shooting !!
The Juniors fought it out all day and sub Jr. Sam Ewert's 1558 was the Any Sight winner in that class.
Congratulations to Larry Sawyer for winning both days events and the over all Regional Championship

Choices, choices ! This weekend there are choices of 4 rifle matches to participate in. Small Bore shooters can shoot both Saturday and Sunday in the Prone Regional at Mpls Rifle Club. Saturdays' match is an Iron sight 1600 with the Any sight 1600 match taking place on Sunday. Highpower shooters also have a full weekend coming up with a Mid Range prone match being shot at NorthStar (Red Wing) on Saturday, and then the long awaited warm-up Team OTC match getting started on Sunday morning, also at NorthStar. I think I'll choose a little of both and since I definitely want to shoot the team match on Sunday, it'll have to be Small Bore prone at MRC on Saturday.

The US Palma Team held a Training session for upper Midwest members of the US Palma Team, this past Thursday through Saturday, at GRRC's long range shooting facility in Harris, MN. Five of the top Junior long range shooters were also in attendance for the three days. This event was far more a working session that just a fun shooting event, as Palma Team Development coach Bob Mead put both the shooters and the prospective wind coaches through hrs of shooting drills each day. Every shot fired by all shooters was plotted for analysis later of both elevation and windage deviation from center. Any shots fired that ended up above or below the ten ring became a point off for the shooter, and shots left and right of the ten ring were marked against the wind coaches. Each shooter had a wind coach positioned close beside their position, with only the wind coach actually turning the windage knobs on the rifle. Each Line coach was equipped with a communications headset and took his direction from the the Back coach -- who actually called for the wind corrections. This system seemed to be working very well. The shooters only worried about delivering shots on the water line through the X ring and let the wind coaches worry about wind corrections.
Now all the plots of each shooters groups are sent off for statistical analysis and then are compared to other shooters and wind coaches efforts at other training sessions. With the good shooting I saw while pulling targets, I believe that we will be sending a great team to Australia in 2011.

WadeKamper Palma Match - May 16th
Stacey Tamulinas and Bill Lair took full advantage of their 3 days of Palma training and practice to top the field at GRRC's Wadekamper Memorial Palma matches on Sunday. Bill, Stacey, and Matt Griffen fired excellent scores of 149/150 at the 800yd line, but then at the 900 yd line, Bill Lair went up 1 point by again firing a 149/150 to Stacey's 148. This is good shooting. The fishtailing winds at 1000 yds kept all the shooters busy watching the mirage and the flags for a hint of corrections to be made. Stacey was best able to see the condition and get the shot off before the conditions changed and dropped only 3 pts in 15 shots for a 147 score, 2 pts better than Bill, and those two pts put Stacey on top with a 444/450 for the match Win.
Other notable scores -- Brian Mrnak shot a 149-9X on the 900 yd line to win that match
Adam Shidla was the top F-class shooter scoring a 439-16x to take that class. John Rykkus also put up a good score in that class with a 525-14x.

The Week Ahead -- Shooters news of the Minn Area - May 19th
The Week Ahead
This week Palma shooters are in town for a Midwest regional training session of the US Developement Team. GRRC, at Harris, MN is hosting this Long Range training session on its 800, 900, and 1000yd firing lines Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I believe that local top ranked Long Range shooters Bill Lair, Stacey Tamulinas, Steve Knutson, Morgan Dietrich and others will all be participating. Shooters will be evaluated on their ability to hold good water line elevation at these long ranges, while coaches will be evaluated on being able to keep their shooters centered up with good wind reading skills. Top shooter/ coach combinations will see the wind coach positioned close enough to the shooter to be the one that operates the wind knobs on the rifle sights. Shooters shoot, -- coaches turn the knobs. This kind of trust by both members of the team are necessary when at 1000yds a wind change of only a couple mph, means more than a foot displacement of the bullet on the target. GRRC gets gold star for having such a quality facility that is capabile of hosting this event.
This coming Sunday, May 23, all shooters are invited to enter and participate in the Wadekamper Mem. Palma match, the last event of this Long Range weekend at GRRC. This open match will be 15 shots plus sighters at each distance of 800, 900 and 1000yds. This event is open to F-Class shooters. Get those long range rifles out and come to GRRC and shoot some Palma.

The match I have been looking forward to for th past few weeks, was the Leg Match. I like shooting Leg Matches--I always have. There is a lot of good reasons to enjoying Leg Matches.
1. Intense Competition. Leg matches are the most important matches for most Highpower shooters. Most of us start highpower and shoot our first matches with a Service Rifle. After we make Expert, we see that we might, I repeat, might get good enough at this to earn a Distinguished Rifleman's Badge and we Start entering Leg Matches to try and get some of those oh, so elusive Leg Points. Leg Points becomes the Holy Grail of our shooting careers. To earn that Badge............ So Leg Matches become Important and the competition is stiff as the top shooters will travel and try to earn points out of State.
2. Short and Sweet. Leg matches are only 50 shots. 10 shots Standing, a string of 10 shots Sitting position rapid fire, another rapid in the prone pos., and then 20 precision shots medium range from the prone pos.
3. No sighters Its a true rifle man's match--- first shot counts, no sighters. You learn your Zeros when you can't count on sighters.
4. Shooting Service Rifles -- It's more fun shooting service rifles than match rifles. There are just less things to adust, or misadjust on a service rifle. Just pick it up and shoot it --as is. Yes, the post front sight is a little harder to see, but I really only see a disadvantage in the longer range prone slow fire. I just find it "easier" to shoot service rifles than match rifles even though I lose a few pts.
5. Friendships Leg match shooters tend to participate on Service rifle teams (to get more practice) and team shooting makes for long term frindships from sharing experiences.
I knew that I had a good chance in this Leg Match to place if I just had a good day. I would also have some competition from Capt. Bob for "high senior" and the usual friendly rivalry between Larry Weidell and myself to see who would beat who that day. Larry and I have been shooting against each other in Service Rifle matches for about 10 years now and are usually separated in scores at the end of the day by a point or two. Last year, he beat me in every match. Well, that was last year. This year it will be different.
I was 1st relay, so I was first up to shoot 200yd standing, and it did not go well. I called the first shot a good solid nine at 3 o'clock, but it came up a 7 at 3 and I was down 3pts. I ck'ed the windage knob to see if I was off 1 revolution--nope. Ok, make no correction but fire a better 2nd shot. I called the 2nd shot a scratch 10 at 3, but again it came up an 8 out the right. I was down 5 pts in two shots, but I knew that the sight was set right and only came over 1 click, and glad of that because 3rd shot went to left, a nine. I finished with 10s but only a 91 total. I thought that I had shot good enough for a better score, Larry Weidell shot a 94 and led the pack, 3 ahead of me, 1 ahead of Jeremy Harrison, and Phil Klanderud at 90.
In the Rapid fire Sitting match that followed, I was hoping for my usuall 98, but good visibility (a sharp bulleye and sight), and a good position got me a clean 100 all grouped just left of the Xring -- 1x. Larry dropped 6 pts, Phil lost 4, but Jeremy Harrison dropped only 2 shots out of the ten ring and took the lead going back to the 300 yd line by one x over yours truly, both down 9 pts total.
The Prone rapid fire match was pretty even. I lost only one pt to Larry W. and still led him by two. Jerremy Gained one pt, while Phil lost one. Larry and Jerremy had 97s, Phil and I had 96s. I'm usually happy to take 96 in the 300yd rapid match. A 6 inch ten ring is not easy to hit at 300 yds as some people might like to think it is.
It was anybody's match to win at the 600 yd line. The light was good, but the wind was swirling around just enough to confuse the flags and most of the shooters. It was not my best performance. I kept hovering around the 10 ring, but here were too many 9s just above and below the ten ring and in 20 shots I lost 14pts -- about 4 below average. Over all I was satisfied. I had shot a 473 -- a respectable score for a senior citizen service rifle shooter. The others also had their long line problems and no one ran away with the match. I had beat Larry Weidell by 1 pt,(finally) on the last shot of the day by shooting an X. I had snuck ahead of Capt. Bob for the Old Guy honors, Won a Silver Medal,, and again had a great day shooting a Leg Match. Life is Good !
Jerremy Harrison won the Gold Medal at Sundays GRRC Leg Match.
Shooters trying to earn points towards the lifetime achiement award of a Distinguished Rifleman's Badge shot 50 rds for record with service rifles Sunday afternoon. Shooting 3 positions and at distances of 200 to 600 yds, Jeremy (previously Distinquished) scored a 475 and the top prize, with Jim Evenson getting the Silver (473), and Larry Weidell taking the Bronze with a 472.
Phil Klanderude was the top non-Distinguished shooter and thus won a leg and 8 pts after five 2nd place finishes over the last few years. Congratulations to Phil, it was a well earned award.

Small Bore
Results from this past Sundays's 1600 prone outdoor conventional Small Bore match at MRC were not forwarded to me in time to be posted here.
Two weeks from now the Sm Bore Conventional Prone Outdoor Regional Championships will be held at Mpls Rifle Club. These are both 1600s with the Iron sight match being Saturday, and then the Any sight champ match being on Sunday. I will shoot the Saturday match and bring back some pictures. 2 day Sm Bore Prone Regional Program -- click here
Two Weeks out
Plan ahead, as there are 4 very good shooting matches planned for the Memorial Day Weekend. There are two highpower events, and two Small bore prone matches. NorthStar Rifle club has a weekend of Highpower which includes a Mid Range Prone match on Saturday, then, on Sunday, the much anticipated warm-up Over the Course team match.. Mpls Rifle Club has both Sat. and Sunday Small Bore Conventional Prone matches -- Regional Championships.
I'll have to make choices as I would like to get to all these matches. First Priority is the Team warm up match-- I'll pick that for Sunday, and though I hate to miss an enjoyable leisurely Mid Range prone match, I want to catch one of the Sm Bore Regional matches, so I'll be at MRC Saturday for their 1600. I've had a couple good Sm Bore prone scores recently, and am looking forward to the next 1600. My discussions with German Salazar about the importance of getting the rear sight closer to the eye and using smaller rear apertures seems to be making quite a difference for me. Look out Expert class.
More on the Team warm-up match---I know that Gopher has got a couple of good teams ready to go. I think that Gopher has a good chance to win this match this year. I haven't heard about the Duluth Guys or the Elk River guys, --- last fall they had a good iron sight team and a good F-team for that prone match. I hope that all the shooters that want to participate in this Team match get to their High Power director so the Clubs can pre-register if possible. Team shooting with coaches is very beneficial to all up-coming shooters. So-- get on a team and we'll see you there.

Flash -- Pictures in from CMP Service Rifle clinic at Gopher range
Todays Service Rifle clinic and M1 Garand match at GRRC were both well attended. Thirty two aspiring shooters benifited from Kurt Borlaug's instruction in the "How to's" of service rifle shootiing and an introduction to Highpower competition.
It couldn't have been a nicer day to be at the range pulling some triggers --- 70 deg with just a light breeze to be refreshing. Experienced coaches were assigned to each shooter who talked and coached each shooter through the 50 rd match. Each participant shot 10 rds Standing, then 10 rds rapid fire from the sitting , and the prone position, and 20 rds from the prone position. Every body had a few good shots to brag about and a few bad shots to forget about. I looked to me that everyone was enjoying the exerience. We all hope to see them come back to another match in the near future.
I'll rearrange and label some of the pictures tomorrow. See clinic pictures -- click here

Don't Forget ! There will be a 50 rd service rifle match tomorrow ( Sunday) -- again at GRRC. Same course of fire, if you weren't there today --- come tomorrow! Match starts 1100 hrs or there after.

Highpower
Two Important shooting days this weekend.
GRRC hosts it's annual Service Rifle Clinic this coming Saturday-- May 15th. New Service Rifle Shooters will attend a class on Service Rifle highpower shooting Saturday morning and fire a 50 rd CMP qualifying match following both slow and rapid firing demonstrations. Note: The Harris exit off of I35 is now open and anybody attending festivities at GRRC this weekend can use that exit? North Branch is now in surgery. Thanks, Kurt

From Kurt Borlaug:
" Boys, Sorry for the duplication of some of you on this missive. GRRC will have it's HP Clinic this Saturday. We are doing a one-day clinic w/ classroom in am and the actual match starts at 12 noon.
I'm asking (pleading begging) for some help with coaches and pits. We are planning to run in three relays as the clinic will shoot concurrently w/ our M1 CMP Match. We request your presence by 11 am.
If you are able and willing please respond by this Wednesday. Last year we had some outstanding help from Non_GRRC members and it made the event go quite smoothly. Remember that these folks are newest of the new and too much info can hamper their experience. Safety is our first concern of course, and the Mn. Rifle Team has a great opportunity to be ambassadors of the sport.
Thanks for the consideration ", Kurt Borlaug kubeborlaug@msn.com
Clinic UP-DATE 5/13 1130hrs
Gentlemen, We will have over 30 clinic students this year. The e-mail traffic over the last few weeks has been heavy.
With this amount of students we believe that the coaches need to distinguish themselves from the students by wearing orange vests......seriously! If you have one of your own great, GRRC has some in the refer in the Island shed. Tom Torborg will be our official "Registrar" in charge of general Cat Herding. He can distribute the vests if you need one.
We need you there by 9am, no later than 10:00. I earlier said 11 but we have upped the time. The actual match starts at 12 noon. Those of you working pits are going to be prepping buckets for the match as well as covering live fire demo.
See you Saturday, bring patience!! Later,
Kurt
Sunday-- May 16 --GRRC will host the first Leg Match of the season in this area. Nervous Service Rifle shooters will be lining up and starding tall Sunday morning at Gopher's 200 yd line, and anticipating earning some of those elusive leg points, and climb that ladder towards a Distinguished Rifleman's Badge, that every Service rifle shooter aspires to earning. Those shooters that are not in the hunt for Leg points will compete for the Medals and just for fun.
From Kurt Borlaug:
".... don't forget the Leg Match on Sunday. We will run a two-man Hearst Match starting at 9am. A $5 donation is requested for entry and awards will be determined by participation for this event. Pair firing is required at 200 Offhand and 600 slow-fire. You are allowed to coach each other with a scope at 300 rapid.
Leg Match starts not before 12 noon."

Mpls Rifle Club -- Annual Meeting !
The spring meeting of the MRC is being held this Thursday, May 13th at 7:30PM. This is one of three meetings scheduled per year as approved by the membership last year.
The meeting will be held at the main clubhouse on the Minnetonka Game and Fish property; it is the first building on the right as soon as you come through the electronic gate.
Among the topics for discussion is the opportunity to purchase the property immediately East and adjacent to the 300 meter range. The property was sold about 5 years ago to a developer before either the MGFC or MRC knew it was even for sale. Now, the developer wants to sell the property for about what he paid for it. This situation presents an opportunity. Do we want to do anything? We will review the meetings that have been held between the boards of MGFC and MRC and have a discussion with the membership as to what action, if any, we should take.
that property would be a buffer and a safety zone, and by keeping it out of the hands of developers, provide more years of staying in this location.

Highpower
Highpower shooters are taking the weekend off this week --- unless you are traveling to the LaCross Rifle Club for Matches. There are no local Highpower this weekend, that I know of.
There is shooting however, as GRRC starts its Wednesday evening Highpower OTC League tomorrow night with a 200 yd standing match, and a 200yd Sitting Rapid Fire match. This League continues most Wed. evenings. All shooters may participate. Thursday evening will see the start of GRRC's Highpower Prone League
From Match Director Kurt Borlaug:
" Howdy Boys,
Wednesday will see the beginning of the HP OTC league. There is seven so far who have let me know their intent to participate. If you want to and haven't let me know, do soo soon. First rounds down at 5:30. We will shoot 200 OH and Rf and then go to 300. After a pit change we'll repeat. I have some nifty scorecards for us to use and you'll keep your own score on the line.
Thursday we will begin the prone league. There are only two who have let me know their interest in this. You will be shooting alongside the F-Class crew. Note that the targets for 300 MRP are in the rack on the north side of pile. I marked the target edges as to their use.
The lock combo is 26-28-2. Use the pasters in there and spotters and buckets. Radios are in the pit box in refrigerator in Island house. MAKE SURE YOU RETURN THE BOX!!! and radios are turned off!!
Hope to see you there on Thursday. Don't forget the Clinic on May 15th and Leg Match on the 16th. There will be a two-man Hearst type match on Sunday am at 9. Leg starts at 12. Let me know if you can help on Saturday. Right now we'll need thirteen people between the pits and coaches. Easy work day! Lemme know!

State Team Captain Kurt Borlaug is looking for shooters to fill out an additional team and participate in the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio this Aug. This is a good chance to see what it is like to shoot in the Nationals, even if you feel your skills are not yet up to the High Master level. Give it a try
From Kurt:
" Guys and Gals, I am asking you to spread the word that Mn. Rifle Team will be looking for shooters and target pullers for out-of comp. teams for the NTT and NTIT at Perry this year. A few of our shooters are willing and able to fill out and the experience is invaluable....and a GAS!!
Out-of-comp teams can be a mix of civilian/ military or from any state. Individual firing members are eligible for Pershing trophy (NTT), the team is NOT eligible for any team awards.
There will be entry fees necessary for each shooter and they will be responsible for their own ammo.
Thanks, Kurt Borlaug" kubeborlaug@msn.com
Reloading for Highpower
I have linked a series of articles on Reloading for Highpower competition on my blog ( http://minnesotarifleshooting.blogspot.com/ )
These articles are all written by my friend German Salazar, who I feel has a very good grasp on this subject -- he also wins a lot of rifle matches.
For the Service Rifle shooter ( or anyone else) I have linked on the Service Rifle Team Blog

Mpls Rifle Club -- Work Days
From George Minerich (MRRA Pres.)
"Hi All:
We had a great work day at the ranges. At the 300 Meter building we repaired the stairs, finished the white pegboard on the south wall, rebuild the benches on the south wall, cleaned the storage room and got rid of a bunch of garbage. The 300 Meter building is looking spiffy!
Brush from the logging was also cleaned up!
Smallbore range projects included hanging new heating ducts and repairing smallbore targets. I m happy to report that there are now a
complete set of practice and match target frames. Our new furnace isabout 70% installed. Great Job!
I would like to thank all the members who came out to help Saturday for workday! We really accomplished a lot.
Regards, George Minerich
Good Work George and the others who participated-- that range always looks tip top.
