Minnesota Rifle Shooting:
The Week Ahead

  Small bore

Hardcore Sm Bore shooters will be back in action this next weekend at the Mpls Rifle Club's 20 position range in NW Anoka county.  That well run Small Bore facility will be hosting the NRA 4 position Regional Championship on July 2nd and 3rd, with the Iron sight matches being shot on Saturday, and the Any sight matches being shot on Sunday.   Shooters will be firing 40 shots in each position on each day.

At the same time Saturday morning (July 2) that the 4P folks are heading NW towards the little town of NowThen, MN,  the Highpower prone and F-class shooters will be heading SE on Hwy 61, past Hastings to the NorthStar Rifle Club to fire the Team Mid Range NRA & F-class Championship.  Teams are 4 shooters and each shooter will fire a 20 shots at the 300yd, 500yd, and 600 yd line.  If you are not on club team yet, check with your HP chairman, call around, or contact Capt. Bob who is writing down names for Pick up Teams.

From Capt. Bob:                dilligas@means.net
MRP shooters:   June 25, 11
We have a master class space gun shooter from Indiana who will be in Minn. this weekend.  He would love to shoot on a pick up team at our MRP team championship July 2. Program attached. If you are interested in a PU team let me know ASAP & I'll try & get him set up with 3 other shooters. He is not concerned about your class, he wants to shoot just because "It's the right thing to do!".  Heck, we could even charge just 4 bucks a shooter  if you want to shoot just for fun & no scores to NRA.

On Sunday July 3, Kurt Borlaug and his team of Service Rifle shooters will have a practice match and training session at NorthStar.  I do not know if this SR match is open to other fun loving service rifle shooters or is just a team event.

More from Capt. Bob:
HP shooters:  June 3, 11
There seems to be some confusion on a tentative NRA match at North Star July 3.  That was a tentative event and due to lack of response it will NOT happen.  However, if you are a service rifle shooter the Minn. State SR team will be running a practice 50 shot course + a Rattle Battle practice on the 3rd at North Star. You can contact SR team Capt. Kurt Borlaug for further information.  kubeborlaug@msn.com
The MRP Team state championship is still on for Sat. July 2 at North Star.

On July 4th those of you who have M-1 Garands, and/or M1A service rifles, will have a chance to exercise those fine rifles in a match at the Eau Claire Rifle Club. There is a separate match for each rifle.  Match program for M-1 match Click here  and Click here for the M1A match program. What a great way to celebrate the 4th -- pulling triggers on an M-14 or an M-1----Yes!

  Last Weekend
I set off for the Elk River Sportsman's Club at the reasonable hr of 0700. It was a fine day for a shooting match.  There were two rifle matches to choose from and I had decided to shoot mid range prone with the 6BR at Elk river today and then shoot the .223 AR match rifle in the OTC match at the Mpls Rifle Club on Sunday. Gathering at the 600 yd line were all the shooters and I saw a lot of really nice F-class equip
ment but no sling shooters to form up a team with. It was a beautiful day, the range was in perfect condition, and it looked like those guys were going to have a great day and a great match

Cathy Hagen sent us in these great pictures of the Mid Range Match at Elk River.  As it turned out, Eric Hazleton showed up Sunday and shot as the only sling shooter and did fire some great scores.  Good going Eric.

However with no team mate to shoot with, I decided to head out to MRC and the OTC match to see if there was an empty spot on the third relay.  I would be in plenty of time, and as it turned out the first relay of that match was just sitting down for the rapid fire match when I got there--- but all relays were full and I would be watching today.  It was nice to be back to MRC for an OTC match after not having been there to shoot one for over 12 years.  The range is in great shape and the pits are park like.
Kevin Bangen won the match  but the news of the day was O mer Hamer breaking the range record of 199-7x in the Rapid fire sitting position by shooting a 199-8x score.  (Mark Rohmer is cking the possibility that Rudy Wadekamper had shot a 200 in the late 90s)
Kevin Bangen also set a range record with his 986 in  Saturday's 1000 pt agg.  Great shooting guys!
A couple of the Duluth guys came down from the North country and bunked in the 300 m house.
Sunday morning headed back to MRC for the  OTC match and had good thoughts of shooting a good score for a change.  It started out fine, I got my highest Off hand score for a long while with a 190, but Kevin shot a 193 to win the match, and Omer was just one pt down with a 189 for his standing.  The sitting Rapid match also went well and after dropping only 3 on the first string, I got them all on the 2nd string with 6Xs,   Omer Hamer made sure that he did own that range record for the Sitting Rapid fire match by shooting a 200-11x and winning that match. Good Scores included Dale Wickstrom's 199, and Expert class Dick Van Valkenberg's  shooting a High Master score of 198.
Morning Colors

We moved back to the 300 yd line and my first Rapid fire prone string went well again with only 2 nines, but on the 2nd string the wheels fell off as the extractor broke after the 6th shot and would only shoot one at time in the alibi so 30 pts were lost there. Erik Rhode fired a 196, leading all the others, but Kevin Bangen, who generally just shoots 10s all the time, shot only one nine and finishes as the match winner with a 199.

In the Prone Slow fire match Glen Cory fired his best of the day and recorded a great 195.  Omer, Wick, and Erik Rhode, all fired high 190s but Kevin followed his scorched earth policy and took his 3rd match of the day with a 199-11 and a 788-31 for the day.  Kevins 80 shot OTC score again  breaks the existing range record!
Congratulations to Kevin for his Win. It was a great day to shoot a match.

Shooters News for the MN Area - The Week Ahead - June 21

The Week Ahead
As we speak, all the serious heavy hitters-- The Long Range Shooters-- are gathering at Lodi, Wisc. in the south central part of that beautiful state, to shoot the MidWest Palma Championship matches.  This Championship series (June 20-24th) grows year after year and is now the most well attended match in the upper Midwest. These well run matches and the great facility draw aspiring international Palma shooters from all over the western US. I'm sure the usual contingent of our own local Nationally ranked Long range shooters will be competing. Good luck Guys and Gals.  Some may stay  on at Lodi for the Wisc. LR St. Champ matches that follow on June 25-26.
Next weekend we have a dilemma. There are two Highpower matches scheduled on top of each other for both Sat. and Sunday and are are only 10 mi apart. This is not the best example of well thought out scheduling.  I know that one of the matches has been on the schedule for a long time and that each club deserves one or more uncontested match dates over the summer.
These matches can be important fund raisers for the host club and losing possible participants to competing clubs can be aggravating.

Those who want to shoot Over the Course matches next weekend can head to Mpls Rifle Club both days June 25 and 26th.  Saturday there will be a 100 shot OTC match including a 2nd  20 shot prone slow fire match. Saturdays match will be followed by a BBQ cookout provided by the club, so bring your appetites along with enough ammo to shoot that extra match. Sunday's match will be a std. National match course 80 shot OTC.  Prone slow fire will be fired each day from 300 yds on reduced targets (MR-63)
Click Here for a Match Bulletin        I think that I'll come one day and shoot the service rifle. That will be fun!  I haven't shot OTC at MRC since BC.

Prone shooters who are not still in Wisc. shooting long range, can find a couple of Mid Range prone matches to contest their skills in next weekend at the Elk River Sportsman's Club.  On June 25th and 26th ERSC will be hosting both a team and individual events to be shot at 600 yds each day.  Saturday will be the 2 man team match (pickup teams allowed) and each team shooter will fire 4 twenty shot matches with Any Rifle, Any Sights. Sundays matches will be individual and also be 80 shots Any Rifle, Any Sights. There are classes for both the sling and the F-class shooter and remember its scopes all day both days if you want.

Last Weekend
Friday
I was ready for a good weekend and a couple good matches.  It was the weekend of the Hunter's Lake 2400 --  3 days of OTC matches up by Cloquet at the Northwestern Gun Club.  I've managed to shoot part of this match every year for a long time now and I had planned to shoot Friday and Saturday this year. However, all my good spots to find a motel room were, full up for Gramdma's marathon and I would just be going up for the day on Friday.  Sunday, I was planning to shoot the Prone 1600 at MRC.
After a couple of cups of coffee and a nice 2hr ride Sat morning I got to NWGC in plenty of time to find a few donuts left in the 200yd house when I signed in.  I got 3rd relay so off to the pits to start with a little target pulling.  That's fine, Its a good way to warm up when it's 56 deg in Duluth on a nice summer morning.  I was hoping to get a reasonable score today as I had a personal low when I was there a few weeks ago.

The wind was up a bit when my Offhand match came but enough lulls gave good conditions for shooting. My no practicing regimen resulted in a couple bad shots and too many 8s and I was out of the High Master scores for the day after just the standing match.  Oh well.  Kevin Bangen shot a decent 190 and took a 5 pt lead on J. Pennington with the rest wishing they had practiced a little more also.  The Sitting Rapid Fire match saw both Omer Hamer and Kevin B. fire 199-7x and J. Pennington staying competitive with a 198 score, and Erick Rhode working his new match rifle well for a 197.
After equipment problems in that 200 yd rapid fire match, Larry Miller came right back with a 197-6 in the 300 yd match to challenge Kevin but that wasn't good enough what with Kevin firing another 199 score and taking a commanding lead for the days completed matches.  Dale Wickstrom had fired 196s in both rapid fire matches and his best was yet to come, but lost points in offhand may be too much to overcome.
The 500 yd match is part of the aggregate, but it is a separate match.  Everyone wants to win the 500 yd match no matter if they did have a bad Offhand match, or a bad sitting match.  Both Erick Rhode and Larry Miller fired clean 200 scores in this days end match, however Larry wins this match by shooting 9 Xs to Erick's 6Xs.  I get my best score for the day in this match along with a string of 7Xs and a low master score of 751 for the day,  so there is hope yet that I might back into the 770s some day.
Kevin Bangen is the winner of the day with a great 785-30 score.
Erick Rhode  -  2nd Place   771-20x
J. Pennington - 3rd place     767-15x
Other notable scores-------Brett Kratt, fired a 746 almost a Master score and way higher than his MK classification.  Way to go Brett!

You can see why Brett is firing such good scores as his Sitting Rapid Fire score --   Click Here  and Turn up the volume!!!

It continues-- My old friend friend Larry Weidell did indeed beat me today by 5 pts.  His 756 score isn't much to brag about, but it was 5 pts better than mine.

Sunday June 19
Today's match choice would be the "Conventional Outdoor Prone Small bore 1600".   It's to be eight 20 shot matches from the prone position with targets at 50 yds (3),  100 yds  (3), and 50m (2).   It was a smaller turnout, probably due to the Fathers Day conflict and due to some of our Juniors being off to Ft Benning to shoot Olympic tryouts.  On the good side, my old friend, Erhard Bruderer from our Swiss Rifle Team days, showed up to join the fun.
We start with the 50 yd Match first thing. This is the easiest target and your best chance to shoot a  200 on a target or even a 400 for the match.  I was trying a rubber eye cup on the rear sight to prevent scratching another pair of shooting glasses as I shoot almost touching the rear sight.  While fiddling with that thing I shoot a 197 and a relatively poor 192 for a 389 in what should be the easiest match of the day turns out to be the worst (last place).  Jim Biles and Luke Taschuk take the lead with a 398s and most of the rest just a couple pts down.  A fishtailing breeze comes up for the Dewar match and cost everyone a few pts. --- Erhard Bruder, Junior Eric Hazelton, and Luke Taschuk do the best, recording 395 scores.
100 yd match- We are shooting a one day regional match course of fire so for the last two matches of the day,  shooters can switch to "any" sights for the last two matches.   This meant that with the wind dying off the scope shooters could just start concentrating on hold and trigger control.  If they got the shot off on the correct side of the X ring it would be in there for at least a 10.  Jim Biles, with long years of practicing the basics, shoots only one nine at the start of the match and then goes clean for a 199-25x.  Again, junior Eric Hazelton takes 2nd place with a 198 and one X more that Erhard.   I think that all that 300m shooting has been good practice for Erhard.
At this point, Erick H. is tied with Jim Biles, both down only 11pts.
The last match of the day would be the tough 50m targets with 10 rings smaller than the 50 yd target and few yards farther back. The wind was lazy. My position was really comfortable and I started with 5x on the first bull.  Well that's nice.  The whole target went well and I got the only 200.  I don't clean the 50m target often so I Knew that I would have to carefull on the next target, but maybe a 400 on this calm day was possible.  It was-- with even more Xs so I was happy finally to win a match with a 400-26. If only I could see that good with Iron sights (!).   Jim Biles's 397 score beats Erhard's 393 in this match for 2nd and 3rd place.  Erick Hazelton loses too many pts on this hard target and his chance to win the match slips away.
At the end of the day the Winner is

1st --  Jim Biles 1586-85x
2nd -- Junior Eric Hazelton 11578-78
3rd --  Erhard Bruderer  1578-77x
4th Junior Luke taschuk  1577-76x

Small Bore:
From: Jason Jarvis:   Shooting in Minnesota this summer: Confirmed!
Jim,

I've faxed my paperwork off to the ATF so I can bring my rifle across the border and shoot the Metric Prone match (small bore) in Minneapolis in early August (6th and 7th at MRC) -- finally! But I've never shot a match at 100 yards before. Do you have any friendly advice? I'll probably stick to iron sights both days and I need to focus on completing a relay in under 20 minutes (I usually take 25 minutes for ISSF matches) but other than that I'm not too worried. This is more of a fun match than a "do or die" thing for me, but I'd rather not embarrass myself too badly. . . .
Jason Jarvis      Fort Frances, Ontario     http://proneinthewilderness.blogspot.com/

From Me:  Jason,  Every match I go to the best I hope to do is not embarrass my self. Sometimes I'm successful!  We are all looking forward to having you come to our match so we can share some shooting experiences.  You ask if we have any advice for you--  of course we have advice for you.  We're Minnesotans and we have lots of advice for everyone about most anything.  Advice about 100 yd Sb shooting --- just come up about 7 moa, watch the wind and go for it.

Shooters News for the MN Area - June 14, 2011

The Week Ahead

This next Weekend offers great opportunities for both the Small Bore shooter and the Highpower shooter.

HighPower shooters are first up and have an 80 shot Over the Course match to shoot on Friday, June 17.  This OTC match is part of the annual 3 day, 240 shot, Hunter Lake 2400. Yes, we'll be shooting 3 days of OTC matches at NorthWestern Gun Club, on shores of beautiful Hunter Lake, a little Northwest of Duluth. This tournament (June 17-19) is always one of the best match weekends of the summer and I hope to see all of you up there pulling some triggers. Click Here for Match Bulletin

For those of you who just can't make it up to Duluth for the matches there, GRRC will be hosting a 50 shot "Fun" type OTC match on Saturday June 18th.
  From Kurt Borlaug: " GRRC is hosting a practice/warmup/fun/ match on the 18th of June for those who can't make it to ... (Duluth). We will have a plethora of activities;
1) 50 shot NMC. Sighters if you need 'em. 2 relays, score yourself.
2) Infantry practice/sight-in/warm-up BRING YOUR OWN IT AMMO!!!!! (75 or 77gr bullets only)
3) CMP sniper match warm-up. We will be selecting our ammo load and getting familiar w/ Tom's arsenal of 1903 and M1 sniper sticks. This is for those who have already committed to this match at Perry. There are a lot of items to flesh out so we won't have time for wannabees/wannatouchies/wannatellstories.
I will ask $5 from each participant to cover target and pasters. ALL TARGETS WILL BE FACED AT THE END OF THIS EVENT! If you are a member of GRRC I am requesting assistance with this. We will start promptly at 9am, be there by 8:15 for squadding etc.
Thanks and hope to see anyone who can't make it to NWGC, Kurt"

Saturday, June 18  for an "Offhand league" match at MRC   -   Click here for match bulletin
Sunday, June 19
for the 2nd in the summer series of  1600 pt prone matches. Growing interest in Prone competition has led to almost full firing lines for these matches. Now that F-class and Seniors shooting scopes are part of the competition, we expect to see the numbers of competitors continue to increase. 8 targets of 20 shots each will be shot and that's a lot of great prone practice---especially for those heading to the Midwest Palma matches next week. Long Range competitors are gearing up to hit the road for Lodi, Wisc. following this weekends Local matches.
June 20-24 will see dedicated long range shooters from all over the US gathering at the Lodi long range shooting facility in Southwest Wisconsin for the Mid West Palma Championships. Daily matches will be shot at ranges from 800 to 1000 yds. Along with the Rocky Mt. Palma matches, this MidWest Palma championship is the place to be for all aspiring Palma shooters before making their way to Camp Perry or to Canada for the Full Bore Nationals.

Last Weekend

Scheduled as a lead in to the MidWest Palma matches starting in just 6 days, the Long Range Regional at GRRC this past Sat and Sun proved to be a good training ground and a great long range match.  With a front having moved through the area the night before, gusty north winds greeted the shooters who came to shoot 1000yds.  Three 20 shot matches with iron sights were the order of the day for the sling shooters, while F-class shooters competed using scopes and rests, they shot the same course of fire but on very  tough 1 moa targets.
055.JPG

Saturday
Match one turned out to be a test of patience as the wind was veering from 11 to 1 o'clock on the gusts and caught a lot of people getting the shot off a little too slow.  The only person cleaning the target was Stacey Tamulinas who somehow found a shooting window often enough to get all shots in the 10 ring.  Bill Lair, Rick Hunt, and Steve Erickson each dropped 4 or 5 pts and would find it hard to catch up.  Sam Hjort, returning to shooting after a long hiatus showed us all that he was still to be reckoned with by firing a match winning score in the F-class of 181.
Match 2 was more of the same difficult wind, with flags pointing in opposite directions all the the same time and shooters spending more time on the scope than on the gun. This time it was Larry Miller, last years National Match Palma winner, who drilled 19 out of a possible twenty  10 and Xs. Steve Erickson, Bill Lair, and Stacey T. all shot mid 190's so the leader board didn't change much.  In the F-class, John Andres fired the top score of 187 and was now a few pts ahead, but in this match Brenda LaValley took a 2nd place with an awesome 186-3 as she started warming up to the conditions. The boys would have to do their best to stay ahead to the end of the match.
Match 3 saw the wind settling down a little bit, but 1000yds is a long way and its still a tough shot with iron sights off your elbows and no clean scores were fired.  After a 195 and a 196 on his first two targets , Bill Lair improved one more point on his last target of the day and shot a 197-7 to win this match. Not far behind was Rick Hunt with a 196-10x,  his best score of the day. Dale Wickstrom, down from Duluth for the matches, also had a good match with a 193-3.
In the F-class, Scott Brabec doubled up his 184 score of match 2, but this time it was good enough for a match win, with Dan Whalen just behind a pt. and Brenda 5 pts back.
So Day one ended with Stacey Tamulinas ahead in the sling and Iron sight shooters group, and Scott Brabec leading Dan Whalen in the F-class group.  Brenda LaValley was just warming up today.

Sunday
I wasn't at the match Sunday, but this in
From Stacey:
"Hi Jim:   Near perfect weather for Sun.  Partial overcast and 5 -10 mph winds from SSE.  The first relay was squaded with the leaders from Saturdays Aggregate.  There was very little wind and it was pretty much an aiming and holding contest.  The wind picked up and required paying attention to the flags.   Attached are the Pictures Chis Hazelton took during the awards ceremony.  As usual Cliff was generous with the cash.
 Stacey"

Sunday was Any sight day for this Long Range match and most used scopes.
Match 4  While the conditions were great, Stacey T. was the only one who was ready to go right out of the gate and the only one to
to post a 200 in the first match of the day.  Other good scores included Jim Soderstrom 199-11, Steve Erickson with a 198-7, and Jay Johnson 197-8.  In the F-class, John Ryhus fired the match winning score 191-3. This was the highest score fired so far this weekend.  Brenda LaValley also shot her weekend best so far and scored a 189.
Match 5  Rick Hunt saved his best for the last match.  A good position, and good conditions were put to good use by Rick and his 198 score wins this match, with Larry Miller, just one back at 197-9x.   While Stacey T. didn't win this match, his 196 score was  consistent with his other scores for the weekend and his overall total of 987-45 was high enough to win the Regional Championship and the trophy that goes with it.

Notes:    The Minnesota National Guard shooting team, lead by Chief Roger Sorbin CW4  and SGT Al Schneider:
Eight Minnesota Army National Guardsmen competed in the MAC Region IV Combat Matches 10-12 June at Camp Perry, OH. Sponsored by the Ohio Army National Guard, The MAC Region IV Combat Match is designed to increase combat marksmanship skills, recognize individual and team achievement, and to develop marksmanship trainers. Combat matches enable Warriors to concentrate solely on  marksmanship training under competitive conditions. This match is open to all MAC Region IV Army and Air National Guard members. Each State may enter up to three teams, with a maximum of twelve firers. Teams consist of four members, with an optional team captain and/or coach. Teams must consist of at least 50% new shooters. (New shooters are defined as not having fired the Combat Team Match at a previous Marksmanship Advisory Council Regional or Winston P. Wilson National Guard Championship Match since 1 JAN 2007.) The Minnesota National Guard Marksmanship Team is preparing to host the Minnesota State Marksmanship Sustainment Exercise (MNMSE) 15-17 July at Camp Ripley, MN.

From Hawkeye--I'm hoping that we all get a chance to shoot with these guys at the State Service Rifle championship.  Thank you for serving.  Let's all remember that MN guardsmen and women are now serving in dangerous places, a long way from home.  Keep them in your thoughts.
