The Week Ahead for Shooters
Well shooters, the competitive season here in MN is winding down. There is one Over the Course Service Rifle match left. This coming Sunday, GRRC is hosting a Service Rifle Leg Match - 50 shot OTC. If you own, and occasionally shoot a service rifle - this is the match for you and its a good one to wind down the season with. This is a Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) sanctioned Match and points towards a Distinguished Rifleman badge are the prize. For those in the hunt for these elusive points, the competition will be fierce. For the Rest of us, it will just be a fun match to shoot. 50 shots---easy day.
We would like to see as many of you there as possible to support this worthwhile CMP program. Numbers count, and the more shooters that participate the more justification there is to keep this program going. So, please support the CMP and come to this Match. Note: Harris exit closed--get off at North Branch, take #61 north to Harris and then west over freeway.

The Week ahead -- competitions
Shooters
Next weekend I show little on my schedule locally for Rifle matches. However, a short drive to Eau Claire National Rifle Club will offer 2 matches to prevent shooting withdrawal symptoms (SWS). Saturday (9/26) is the usual 600 prone match and there will be an Over the Course match on Sunday. Other than the GRRC Service rifle Leg Match on Oct 4th, these will be the last OTC and MR matches within easy driving distances. I suspect there will be a great turnout. You've seen the pics on the shooting blog, Eau Claire is a very nice range to shoot at.
Last Weekend
Talk about a way to wind up the High Power shooting season with a bang --just schedule the NRA Champ match and the all important Club vs. Club championship match on the same weekend in September.
NorthStar Rifle Club near Red Wing, Mn was the place to be last Sat and Sunday. The rescheduled NRA Regional Championship match on Saturday saw Kevin Bangen complete his sweep of the Over the Course Minnesota championships, this year by firing a 783-26x to take the Gold Medal. I remember Rudy Wadekamper saying that if you shoot 25Xs that's a good days shooting, so congratulations to Kevin for a good days shooting and that Gold Medal. Silver Medal to Omer Hamer, and Bronze to Steve Erickson who overcame equipment problems to take that medal. Other Class winners were Mark Havlik - master, Don Mastro - Expert, and Lisa Johnson -Sharpshooter. A gentle breeze and Fall colors appearing made this a fine day to pull some triggers. Mike May match director-- great job!
The Big Match
It was the Big Match -- all the marbles were on the table, the bragging rights were up for grabs, it was the Club vs Club shoot-off and the State's top rifle clubs sent their best shooters to contest for honors. This would be a prone match at 300 yds to 600yds. There would be three 20 shot matches with irons and one 600 yd match with any sights to test the shooting skills, and the wind coaching skills of the each team.
After years of dwindling participation in Team Matches, this year would be different. All Star teams of open associations would be discouraged, and shooters would be encouraged to shoot for the Home club. Club championships would mean something again. The challenge was issued and the Clubs answered that challenge.
Gopher Rifle and Revolver Club would send 3 complete sling shooter teams and one F-class team under team captian Kurt Borlaug. Elk River Sportsman's Club sends both an F team and a Sling team led by Tim Thole. North Star Rifle Club under Dbl. Distinguished Capt. Bob Peasley, also fields a team in each division -- a High Master Sling Team, and the F-Team to be anchored by Ken Erickson - former NRA National Champion in 1960, and celebrating his 85th Birthday today. LaCrosse Rifle Club sent US Palma team shooters, Sandy Pagel (capt) and Bill Lair to bolster their teams chances. Air Force Rifle Team shooter Matt Griffen, HM Elliot Zunich--NWGC, would form an Assoc. pickup team with Elk River prone masters Mark Rohrman, and Phill Klandurd. And if you think that even one of these hard holding teams would have a lock on the trophy -- Forget It! Minneapolis Rifle Club was also sending current members of the US Palma team, Stacy Tamulinas, and Steve Knutson, International 300 m shooter Erhard Bruderer, and he who wins most every type of shooting event he participates in--Kurt Kisch. Minneapolis Rifle club came to play.
The day was gorgeous, 75 deg, blue sky, and light fishtailing wind that would come into play later at the 500 yd line.
Mpls Rifle club (MRC) started right out at the 300 yd iron sight match with two clean scores from Stacey T., and Kurt Kisch (16Xs), coming off the line only 4 pts. down. The LaCrosse Rifle team also benifited from two clean targets fired by their Palma experts, B. Lair, and Sandy Pagel-(11x) and went to the 500 yd line 5pts down. MRRA assoc team hung in there and but had dropped
9pts. Unforced errors by Gopher shooters took the pressure off that team early.
At the 500 yd line MRC did well with Steve K. on the scope and turning the knobs for his shooters. Stacy T. again cleaned the target- (17Xs !), but with the 6 range flags now all pointing different directions, and the breeze getting stiffer, MRC lost 17 pts and would have to suck it up to have any chance of final victory. On the other hand Northstar, and MRRA teams had all shooters firing solid 198s or 197s, losing only 10 pts per team. Even with Sandy Pagel turning the knobs, the LaCrosse team lost 16 for their 4 shooters.
The 600 yd line -- MRRA assoc. team was in the lead by 3 pts, two matches to go. Matt Griffen started things out for those guys with a 199 but it wasn't enough to keep them in front. They have their worst match and go down 21 pts. Fishtailing wind also confounds LaCrosse, and Northstar who average 4 pts lost per shooter, but not MRC and Kurt Kisch again shoots clean, while the others only lose 8 total, and MRC goes into the scope match, now ahead by 7 pts--not necessarily comfortable with that slim margin.
The Scope Match. The pressure is on. Steve Erickson of NorthStar, Stacey. T of MRC, and Matt Griffen of MRRA hold hard, losing no pts for their teams. Even with local knowledge, the home team NorthStar, loses 16 in the difficult conditions. LaCrosse also suffers a couple unforced errors and loses their chance to win by losing 24 pts in that match. However its those 300 m and Plama experts from MRC that shine in this final match, only losing 13 team pts. They hold on to their lead and win the match.
Congratulations to Minneapolis Rifle Club -- winners of the 2009 upper midwest Club Championship. NorthStar Rifle club --2nd, and Lacrosse 3rd. Top Individual shooters in the Team Match was Stacey Tamulinas who lost only 3pts the whole match -- 797-45x, and Sandy Pagle with a 795-42x --- That's fine shooting.
F-Class champs are NorthStar Rifle club, with Jerry Johnson, Ken Erickson, Bruce cotton, and Ben Winget. 2nd place to the new team of shooters from GRRC -- S. Hoskins, Collin Mitchell, Greg Wahistrom, and G. Mitchell. They did very well for their first match as a team. Ben Winget turned in the top F Score with an astounding 792-39x -- whew!
This was the best team match we have had in many years. 11 club teams from around the state and Wisc. participated. It would have been nice to have seen a team from Northwestern Gun Club (frozen in already or what?), and Eau Claire Nat. Rifle club. They can both field powerful teams but chose to rest on the laurels of their past triumphs and did not contest for honors this year. Next year maybe they will answer the Challenge. We hope so.

The Week Ahead
This is the weekend when all the bragging rights are on the line. The two biggest matches of the year are on this weekends schedule. NorthStar Rifle Club will be the site for the rescheduled NRA Regional OTC championship on Saturday. On Sunday it is Club vs Club in the hotly contested Mid Range prone Team Championship. This year there is more interest in shooting for Club vs Club bragging rights than ever before. With a new format that encourages shooters to shoot for their "home" team, and not some "intra-club Lightholder, or Association all star teams", each club will have a much better chance to put their name on the Team Trophy. Clubs are taking this match seriously this year, with GRRC rumored to be sending 3 Teams, Elk River bringing 2 teams, and even Mpls Rifle Club is sending a team of 300 meter experts. Will the hard-holders from Northwestern Gun club, or the always powerful NorthStar team be able to defend their past championships--- We'll see. Eau Claire National Rifle Club,--bring your best!
Are you going to be there shooting for your club? I hope so.
But First
It's not often that I Iike to get extra early (0500 hrs) to go to a rifle match, but when there is a chance to get up north for the day and shoot a good match, I'll make the sacrifice. So with the range at Hunter Lake on the radar I was crossing the St Louis River in Cloquet Saturday about an hour after sun up. It was a misty scene with mirror smooth water--what a sight. When I crossed again up near the range---Well, see the picture on the blog. I guess us Norwegians just like smell the pine trees and lakes once in a while.
Northwestern Gun Club was hosting the 9/11 Patriot's match -- 2 days of prone shooting and a good tune up for the MR club championship coming up. Saturdays course of fire was all at 300 yds, with 2 iron sight matches and 2 any sight matches. The morning fog caused a short delay till the targets could be seen, but by 10 o'clock the first relay was on the line and the match was on. Stacey Tamulinas showed that he hasn't lost anything since his success at the Canadian Nationals by hammering the X-ring 16 times in that first iron sight match and going clean for the first 19 shots when he proved the old adage that "8s happen" and left the line a couple Xs ahead of Dave Salo with 198 scores and a pt ahead of Elliot Zunich at 197. In the 2nd iron sight match Stacey made up for his only bad shot so far and fired a 200-15x getting a couple pt jump on D. Salo but right behind were Larry Miller and Mark Rohrman with 199-10x. In the first Any Sight match both Dave S. and Larry M. shot clean and this put Dave up by one over Stacey, with Larry down by 2 and Elliot and yours truly now 5 pts back and losing traction. In the final any sight match Larry M. would not be denied and again shot a clean 200-13x to Stacey and Dave's 198s. but this good shooting would only manage to tie Dave's 793, and Dave Salo's 42 Xs beats Larry's 37 Xs for the Win. Stacey T. landed in 3rd place 1 pt back, with a monstrous 56 X count on that 2 in x ring. Amazing! In the Master class John Andres finished with a 199 and Omer Hamer finished with a pair of 199s--John taking the class win over Omer and Elliot by just one pt.
Sunday saw another short fog delay before the start of the 500 yd matches -- a good time to ck out the competition and chit chat for a while. Good Eyes and a tenacious hold saw Stacey take the first Iron match on a 199-9 score but only 1 ahead of Phill Klanderud's 198. The 2nd Iron match shuffled things up a bit, with Larry miller clawing back to go one up on Stacey with a fine 199-6 for the conditions, but not good enough to stay with Phill K. who was now down only 5 and leading into the scope matches. In these last two Any sight matches, Larry Miller never gave the competition a chance --shooting every one of the 40 record shots in to the ten and x ring. Both Omer Hamer and Stacey shot one of those matches clean, but a 398 or 399 never beats a 400, and Larry Miller takes the day with a 794 to Stacey' 791 and Dave Salo at 788.
So the competition was very tight for the two great days of matches at Northwestern Gun Club. Larry Miller takes the 1600 two day agg. with a 1587-72. 2nd was Stacey T. with 1583-91. Omer Hamer squeaked out a Master Class win over John Andres by only Xs as both shot 1567s.
In the ever more popular F-Class, D. Zeffke pretty much had his own way all weekend over the 6 other F Troops, ending up both days a little ahead of Ron Berg and Gary LaValley and taking the two day agg.

"Hawkeye,
I stumbled across your blog looking for info on rifle shooting in Minnesota. I shoot ISSF smallbore prone and live right across the border in Fort Frances and I’m thinking of getting the paperwork so I can bring my rifle into the U.S. and compete next year. I was going to drop down to Hibbing to see the state championships a couple of weeks ago but I’d just gotten home from the Canadian nationals so had a largish “honey do” list to work through first. J

300 m Shooting
"The MRC 300 meter club match was held Sunday, September 13, 2009. There were 5 competitors and Chuck Diehl breaking in barrels of two guns. What a wonderful day to shoot. Calm, sunny and comfortable in the air-conditioned shooting house; outside it was also calm and sunny with temp at high as 76 but with humidity in the 80’s, at least.
The results can be seen at http://www.edfpages.com/mgfc/results.php?match=9
Kurt Kisch came a bit late but managed to beat everyone even though he was handicapped using iron sights. He beat F-class shooters (of which there was one…me). He kicked butt shooting a 6.5-308 thingie.
I shot about my average for my Savage box stock .223 even though I shot fast but had good sight pictures through the scope and I felt good. ..........

Disgruntled Sharpshooter lashes out!
All is not peaches and roses in shooting land.
Its time for all you Masters and Highmaster shooters to look inward to see what you have done for shooting lately. I received the following thoughts from a disgruntled sharpshooter today, and I think it bears some reflection about us and our sport. Here is the excerpt
that is pertinent to us all.
"....... I personally think the masters and high masters don't do enough for the new shooters. They should be the ones putting teams together, running the practices, putting together teams to go to Perry and recruiting new shooters. Instead they provide terrible pit service, nit pick other shooters incorrectly about rules and do nothing to make a new shooter want to come back to a match. I try to get squaded with non high master because of these reasons...."
Does this bother me--- no, not much, I've been called High Master scum by experts. (where is Coby D. these days?) However, it's hard to even argue with someone who thinks this way. So, lets use this a teachable moment, and try to see what it is that newer shooters expect from us, even if they are not totally aware of who gets a lot of the work done in shooting sports. I'm sure that we can all work a little harder for the benefit of the newer shooters.

Historical Minnesota Shooting Plaque
From Capt. Bob Peasley:
"Sep. 3, 09 This plaque was won by John Andres Sr. in about 76 at Camp Ripley & the match was never run again. John has graciously donated it for a GS (Grand Senior) plaque and I had the original brass plate attached to the back. I have paid for the new plate & engraving. So from here on it will just cost MRRA 17 cts per character to have the name and year engraved. I also took the liberty to back date last years name on the plate so it's off & running. .......
HOLDHARD,
Bob"
And from George Minerich:
"Hi All: Just so everyone knows the logo in the upper left is the MN Army National Guard STARC Unit emblem (state support group) and it's still in use. The emblem on the upper right is the Viking Unit emblem which is the old MN emblem which is out of use now. Its changed to the 34 Div. Red Bulls. The towers and gates are the main gate to Camp Ripley. I like it!
Regards George"
Thanks Guys, Its great to learn a little history behind our sport

Shooters
The Week Ahead -- Sept 1, 2009
Highpower shooters will have to travel to the Eau Claire Rifle Club this weekend to find a match to shoot in. Once there they will have a MR 600 yd prone match on Saturday, and a 80 OTC Sunday to participate in. Small Bore shooters can stick closer to home this next Sat & Sun, as Mpls Rifle Club will be hosting the Small Bore 3P metric Regional. Programs for these matches can be viewed in "program links"
Pistol shooters have a 50m Free Pistol event at Oak Dale -Saturday, and an NRA State Champ Match and Leg match at MGFC on Sunday.
Note: Wahl Classic Rifle Shoot 9/13/09 (Fergus Falls) added to schedule .
But First
Long Range
Stacey Tamulinas sent in this Rpt. on the DCRA (Dominion of Canada Rifle Club) LR matches at the Canadian Nationals in Ottawa this month.
"First, let me say that this was the longest tournament I have ever participated in. After the 6th day I started getting used to it.
Second, it was kind of a long way there. Third, without having to be constantly doing scoring or pit duty, it wasn't nearly as exhausting
as Camp Perry. The routine was two 10 to 15 shot matches in the AM and Two 10 to 15 shot matches in the afternoon. When you are
not shooting you can go back to the motel (about 10 min away) or hang-out on the club house porch. Very civilized.
There was an amazing array of matches consisting of one, two or three distances ranging from 300 M, 500 yds, 600 yrds, 800 M and 900 M. Then just to make things more confusing there are aggregates of the various groupings of various matches.
If you go to the web site, you will see about 100 different matches. (www.dcra.ca/results/2009/cfrc/aggindex_a.htm) I hope that's right. If it's not let me know. Some of the matches are only open to the cadets ..... Canadians or F-Class shooters. There were about 200 TR (target rifle) shooters. The country of the shooter is listed behind each name.
To condense things, I will limit the matches that I got a medal in. The last I checked, all the matches did not have the medals assigned. There was only one gold and silver for each match or aggregate. Some matches the bronze go down to 15% of the # in that class.
Note: 5 ring target, 5's are 10's V's are X's
The Canadian Match:(Team) USA Gold (USA has not won this match in a LONG time. I received a medallion for high score for the all the teams. Could not have done this without 4 wind coaches though.
Commonwealth Match (Team) -- USA Gold (Team member Charles received medallion for high score for all the teams)
All Commers Aggregate: - 3rd Bronze
Colonel Brick: 100 V9 7th Bronze
The Gateneau: -- 75 V8 --5th Bronze. (Morgen was in 3 way shoot off for 1st. took the Gold)

.......
Steve K. decided not to shoot any of the matches and instead took pictures of the flags and is making a note book ... about the range. Anyway, I'll probably go again next year. Enjoyed shooting with the other USA shooters. I met some fine competitors from Germany and Canada. ........

1. This past weekend, the Small Bore State Outdoor Conventional Prone championships
were held at a 2 day match in Hibbing, MN. Competitor Ross Ewert was kind enough to send us a short note about this match
From Ross--
"I attached the results and a couple of pictures from the state smallbore prone match held in Hibbing this past weekend. After a cold and blustery Saturday, with a strong quartering head-wind, the second day provided blue bird weather. In the end,
Lance Peters retained his State Champion title and
Alex Giesar won the Junior State Smallbore Prone Championship.
Note that the matches were shot in the following order(and listed in the results): Dewar, 100yd, 50 yd, Metric.
Results and a few pictures that can be seen below
Congratulations to Lance Peters and Alex Giesar -- Champions
2. The GRRC Prone Small Bore league has finished up it's summer schedule except for those who need to make up any of the matches. Four complete 1600s were shot over the summer --one match at a time each monday. The Monday morning contingent finished up yesterday on a good note. Gordy Kordoski tried out his new shooting glasses and fired a personal record 50 yd match---198. What a great way to end the league.
Nice shooting Gordy.

2. Late news--- Bald Eagle Sportman's Assoc. , White Bear Lake, Mn. will be hosting a 50 shot CMP Service Rifle match on Sept 12. I have shot 4 matches there over the years and each was a good time with about 12 shooters competing, If you are not traveling to Duluth for the MR Prone matches that weekend, this is a good fun, low stress match to try that is close to home. But don't bring your ego, as there are some good shooters there that we don't normally see at other matches that can put up some pretty good scores. Sometime in the near future, it would be nice to encourage a team from BESA to be at our state matches.

Minneapolis Rifle Club - Small bore Aug 22

Small Bore Prone 1600 at Mpls Rifle Club
Juniors and Adults shot a 160 shot Small Bore prone match at Mpls. Rifle Club this past Saturday. Senior Shooter Lance Peters shot an astounding perfect score -- 1600/1600!
That's right --160 10s and Xs in a row. Great shooting Lance ! He is not getting older--just better!
The Week Ahead for shooters -- Aug 27, 2009
If you want to shoot a rifle match this coming weekend, you must travel to Lacrosse for High Power matches, or to Hibbing for Sm Bore prone. Lacrosse has an OTC on Saturday, then a Mid Range prone on Sunday. The MN State Conventional Prone (2-day) Small Bore Championship will be held in Hibbing, MN and is a 2 day match.
But First
Long Range -- The 30 cal riflemen
A very beautiful day awaited the few long range shooters who showed up for the Rudy Wadekamper Memorial Palma matches held this weekend at GRRC. A blue bird day was the case as the shooters fired 15 shots each at 800yds, 900 yds, and 1000yds for record. The Same course for fire was shot both sat and Sun.,
On Saturday-- Elliot Zunich topped the list at the 800yd line, dropping only 1 shot out of the 10 ring for a 149 score and gaining a 3pt lead over Bob Peasley and John Andres. At the 900 yd line Bob showed everyone how to hold hard and use Iron sights at long range by cleaning that target while the others found the wind rising added to the chance of dropping a nine out the sides if they weren't very carefull. Think about what happens to a bullet as it flys 900 yds through the wind eddies. With Elliot and John both dropping 6pts, Bob layed down at the 1000 yd line now 3 pts to the good. The easy wind of earlier in the day gave way to fishtailing gusts and the 1K shooters were becomming happy to keep it in 9ring. Elliot did read that wind better than the others, taking the match from Bob by 3 pts, but that just put them in a tie for the days Agg. score. Both had shot 434 score for the day and so it was Bob's higher X count that gave him the win. Winner Bob Peasley 434-18
On Sunday John Andres started at the 800 yd line showing he wasn't giving up on the weekend by taking all the points availiable --150. Bob also held hard, giving John no reason to be comfortable, and took 150 pts him self. Elliot 4 back and John Nelson back 6. At the 900 yd line, John faded by shooting 2 nines and a x-fire. Elliot couldn't catch up from behind as Bob again fired an almost perfect score, losing just 1pt. Bob gave the others no hope at the 1000 yd line by giving up only 3 pts. The other shooters, already behind by too much, shot good, but not good enough and Capt. Bob wins with a great 446-3x.
With his good shooting both days Capt Bob is the Rudy Wadekamper Palma champ for 2009
Congratulations Bob!
a few pictures of this match are posted at: http://minnesotarifleshooting.blogspot.com/
I might note the most improved shooter was John Nelson. I pulled his target Sunday all day and I saw most shots were water line shots, X ring high. Watch out guys when John gets more wind reading practice.
Sunday, there was an uneven number of shooters so I filled in pulling a few targets.. Since there was only one shooter on the target I pulled, I got a chance to plink some rds from my almost new 6BR at the 800 yd line. As I have said before, this rifle was just re barreled and tuned up by Randal Gregory -- Accuracy Unlimited, Custom Rifles, Medford Wisc. It had performed very well at the Red Wing Mid range match dropping only 3 pts all day. I added the 11 moa to my 600 yds zero, that Capt. Bob recommended, put on a click or two for wind and fired one sighter------------------------Pin wheel X, followed by two 10s just to the left. Thank You Randy Gregory
Palma Team
Local U.S. Palma team shooters have returned from The Canadian Full Bore nationals after having shot both individual and Team matches. Steve Knutson, Morgan Dietrich, and Stacey Tamulinas were part of the US Palma team that swept all 3 long range team matches--1st place. I believe that both Stacey and Morgan also had 1st place scores in individual matches, and that Stacey also took home two Bronze medals.
I hope we can get a report from one of the guys about these important international matches and even post a few pictures.
Congratulations US Palma team and Minn Palma Team shooters.
Service Rifle News
To all;
GRRC has applied to the CMP for a Rifle Leg Match on Sunday, Oct. 4th, 2009. I've attached the program and if Minister Havlik can post on the MRRA site I'd appreciate it. If you are eligible to fire this match, less than 3 matches plus Perry come out and bring a friend. If you have fired your allotted matches you can still shoot it for practice. We will need some shooters willing=2 to be squadded w/ new shooters too.
Leg Match Program-- http://www.mrra.org/downloads/grrc/2009_EIC.pdf
There was four new members at GRRC last Tuesday who watched an impromptu firing demo and they peed their pants. Never having seen what we do, and witnessing two rapid strings and then going to the pits and seeing what we do with IRON SIGHTS!!!! I had an instant clinic on my hands!! More to follow,
Kurt Borlaug
F-Class
From Capt Bob:
"I talked to the NRA rules committee at Perry about several things but for now lets talk F class. ..................
NRA says we can combine F class with sling shooters at a LR or MRP regional and get separate medals for F class. In the program we must state there will be medals if there are a minimum of some uncertain number of en tries. They would not commit to a hard # but agreed 10 was satisfactory. ............."

Did those guys really shoot a 200 yd Sm Bore Match
Minneapolis Rifle Club Conventional Prone Smallbore Rifle --August 22, 2009
It was about perfect as a day could be for a match,. It was warm, sunny and the wind was calm. Fourteen shooters competed in the 160 round prone match. Shooters included two Juniors , three Sub Juniors and nine Adults. The event went off without a hitch. There was one small glitch, one of the shooter s left his rifle at the range and there was a small discussion about how long it should be hidden to make him worry. In the end kind harts prevailed and it was sent home with his friend.
When the day ended Lance Peters of Maple Wood was the match winner with a1600 -114X. That is some outstanding shooting!
Larry Sawyer of Andover, MN was high Master with a 1591-100X .
Ross Ewert won the Expert Class with a 1588 -100X.
Mike Marzitalli won the Marksman/Sharpshooter Class 1437-21X

If you want to shoot a rifle match this coming weekend, you must travel to Lacrosse for High Power matches, or to Hibbing for Sm Bore prone. Lacrosse has an OTC on Saturday, then a Mid Range prone on Sunday. The MN State Conventional Prone (2-day) Small Bore Championship will be held in Hibbing, MN and is a 2 day match.

To all;
GRRC has applied to the CMP for a Rifle Leg Match on Sunday, Oct.

Other honors include: Alex Gieser High Junior and Eric Hazelton was high Intermediate Junior.
The following is a complet e list of shooters and their scores:
Chad Danielson --1572-68

"Note: About Emily Quinar--
You ever shoot an air rifle offhand? I'm a pretty good standing shooter, and I'm pretty happy to average 95's offhand. A few points above that is gravy. Emily averaged 98.5/100 standing. Over eight targets. Over three days. She shoots standing better than almost everyone else can shoot prone with an air rifle. I'm the coach, and even I'm impressed.

late news--Wed morning from Mark Havlik
"Jim,
Here's an after action report from the 1 day OTC match at North Star Aug. 16. Evening thunderstorms and early morning rain must have kept completive shooters at home Sunday morning. Only 8 hearty souls showed up for the 1 day OTC match Sunday August 16 at NSRC. Even though the paperwork arrived in time to host a NRA approved match, because of the low turnout, the decision was made to hold a 2 relay fun match. Shooting conditions started out with overcast and threatening skies. The clouds broke up and the sun came out turning up the heat and humidity. The clouds returned just in time for 600 yard slow prone to eliminate any hint of mirage making reading North Star's swirling winds a guessing game. As this was shot as a fun match every competitor kept their own scores and none were turned in. My guess is Jeremy "Mr Distinguished" Harrison won but I have no idea what his score was. I shot a somewhat disappointing 749-17 but the bright spot of the day was junior shooter Pat May shooting a personal best of 183-?x at 600. Way to go Pat! Even though I did hear a few cuss words during shooting, I heard no complaints about the match so I can honestly say everyone had a good time. Thank you to all the shooters who braved the challenging and changing conditions. And a big thank you to Mike May who ran the line and kept everything running smoothly. Even a bad day shooting is better than a good day at work. Keep them in the x ring.
Mark Havlik --
I also got a note from Gary Boettger (218-739-2154) of the Fergus Fallls rifle club about their "Wahl classic Rifle Match" on Sept 13..... I'll post the program on the blog asap. It looks like they are having a 200 yd reduce OTC match and should be fun if you are in that area. It would be nice if Gary sent us a picture or two of that match.

"Here are the results for the August MRC Olympic Free Pistol Match shot on the 15th. It is a 60 shot match with three 20 shot series after a sighting in period. It is shot over 2 hours. (Results) Lance Peters 532, James Reedstrom --466, Steven Stud--461, Mark Peabody --429, Michael Marzitelli --411, Joel A. Peabody --411, Arnold Olsen --392, Karl A. Studt --384.
Highlights of the day: There was a very strong across course wind from left to right which befuddled at least one shooter to no end. He was shooting in the position closest to the berm and couldn't believe is shots were grouping into the wind rather than down wind. The more experienced shooters however, in this adversity, just seeme d stronger than ever. We had two father-son teams. Each of the sons are in the process of learning their equipment being at the beginning of their mastery of free pistol. With the forthcoming air pistol season for them to further develop their skill, it will be a joy for all to watch them as they develop. --

Long range shooters, both F-Class and Sling shooters have a great chance to test their skills this weekend at the Rudy Wadekamper Palma matches at GRRC. Both Saturday and Sunday shooters will be slinging lead at distant targets on the GRRC 1000yd rifle range. A Palma match is 15 shots for record at the 800, 900, and 1000 yd line. If you have at least mid range zeros on your rifle, you will not find it too hard to get on target at the longer distances. These Palma matches are good wind reading exercises, and while it's not too hard to hit the target way out there, it is hard to keep em in the 10 ring. Give it a try.
Small Bore shooters head to Mpls.Rifle Club or Elk River Sportsman's Club for prone small bore matches. The Elk River match is a Mini-Plama which includes shooting .22 prone out to 200 yds, and the MRC match is a Conventional Prone Outdoor 1600 with targets at 50yd, 50m and 100yds. Minn Service Rifle Team -- Camp Perry Report
Minnesota Service Rifle Team shooters have Returned from Camp Perry and Larry Weidell has written up this report about this years National Team Trophy competition to share with us
Camp Perry 09 -- MN Service Rifle Team
The weather this year was fantastic with the temperature hovering around the high 70’s and mid 80’s. While it threatened to rain a couple of days it held off till the final day when we were shooting the Garand match and the skies opened up and dumped on us. It didn’t stop the match though! The wind was the Camp Perry usual blowing and fishtailing. Some of our new shooters had never put on four minutes of wind and that wasn’t enough at times.
Commercial Row is one of the few places where guys go shopping. It’s the only place where all of the vendors who cater to High Power are located for two weeks out of the year. All of the stuff you usually look at in catalogs is on display. Add the CMP store located just a couple of hundred yards away to list of vendors and you have the capability to empty your wallet of cash and wear the numbers off your credit card. The good news was that many of the vendors had hard to get reloading components. The bad news is the prices were a lot higher than we have been used to paying.
The shooting was great. With only a few exceptions the CMP did a great job running the matches. I can attest that all of my shots went into the Lake Erie. There were plenty of shoulda, coulda, woulda to be heard. The highlights were Jeremy, Matt, Al, and Eric got leg points. In fact Jeremy legged out and received his medal on stage. Kurt B also got a Daniel Boone medal from the NTI match. The Hearst Doubles and the team matches were exciting. Tom did a masterful job of making the target go up and down in mere seconds allowing the shooters to shoot lots of tens and X’s during the NTT (6 man team) match. The NTIT (Rattle Battle) was the usual adrenaline pumping action filled event. While the team didn’t get top honors we did score higher than the last two years combined.
Dining out was always an experience. The pizzas and burgers at Bel Mel were fantastic. Let’s say that it will be a long time before we eat any Mexican in Port Clinton. If you like walleye then the Jolly Roger is the place to go. Hard to believe but one of the best burgers was the Angus (the g is not silent) at McD’s. Maybe it was because we were hungry and it had been a long day.
One of the great things about Perry is meeting old friends. The more years you go the more friends there are to see. Given that I have lived and shot matches in MN, TX, MO, AZ, and shot matches in CA, NM, CO, IL, and OH there were a lot of people to say hello too.
You cannot help but meet new friends at Camp Perry. You get paired up with different people from across the country and stuck in the pits for a couple of hours each day. On one occasion I struck up a conversation with a young college student on the target next to me. Jen said that she was thinking about shooting the Springfield match but didn’t bring her rifle. I offered her the use of mine and she said she would try and get signed up for the match. She called me a day or two later and said that she was signing up. While the MN team was shooting the Rattle Battle she got us squadded. The bad news for the other MN shooters is they got wait listed for the match because it was overbooked. The CMP at that point decided to run another relay. Jen and I promptly volunteered to pull targets for the extra relay. Jen’s goal for the match was to get all ten shoots off in rapid fire. She shot a 98-5 slow fire and then got all ten shots off with time to spare with a 92 during rapid. I think my coaching helped. Standing wasn’t as pretty but even with a miss she got a bronze medal. Kurt B also borrowed my rifle and managed to shoot well enough to earn a gold medal. I got a gold medal as well.
This was my first year shooting with the MN team and all I can say is I look forward to shooting with the team in years to come here in MN and at Camp Perry. Kurt did a fantastic job coordinating training prior to Perry, carpooling, obtaining housing, getting shirts and hats and many other tasks. Everyone else pitched in as needed to get things done so no one person got dumped on.
As in previous years at the end of the week and on the trip home, there was discussion about what we can do to grow the sport. It would be great to have more competitors on the line at home and at the Nationals. Many suggestions were floated. I would guess that we get more new shooters from walk-ons and those brought out by friends than from clinics. So for the good of the sport bring out some friends. Find some Juniors to bring out as well. Girl-friends and wives are welcome as well, maybe not at the same time though.
Hold hard and favor center,
Larry Weidell

50 m Free Pistol match --Aug 9th
from Mike Marzetelli
"The day was a classic summer day with the match starting at 8:45 AM. Eight shooters participated on the 50 yard competition range at Oakdale finishing by 11:00 AM. The results were as follows: Lance Peters -- 514, Thomas O'Donnell --493, Steve Studt -- 480, Jim Reedstrom --468, Mike Marzitelli--462, Joel Peabody--438, Karl Studt--376, Arnold Olsen--332.
We had a good range of shooters participating, from the old pro's such as Lance and Tom to the newer free pistol shooters Karl, and Arnie. Interestingly, we have a group of shooters who on any given day outshoot each other on a given 20 shot series making for interesting match conditions. The forthcoming state championship will be a real contest with many contenders. The next match will be at MRC later in August. September will have matches at Oakdale and MRC with the state championship match held at the end of September at Oakdale. We have room for a half dozen more competitors. The price is right, only $10 to compete with a coffee session usually following the match." --Mike M.
I should go to one of these matches, I could use a free pistol
300 meter match at MRC
from Brian Shiffman
"August 9th was a fine day to shoot. Warm weather, only slight breezes, and a bright day. Overall, it should have made for really good shooting; we all should have shot 600. The temperature was warm enough to fire up the air conditioning in the shooting house.
The results can be seen at http://www.edfpages.com/mgfc/results.php?match=8
Wade Brown came back for a return engagement and promptly cleaned our clocks. All shooters we shooting F-Class which was a first for the club. The scores were pretty close. Ali was back with is favorite Tikka in 6BR. This was Adam’s first time shooting at our range and was shooting a 6BR as well. Wade had his custom 6.5x47 and I tried some different loads with my Savage .223. It appears, from the discussion, that no one shot their best and excuses were many and varied. I thought the earth was a bit wobbly while Adam was sure his rifle barrel, with perhaps 600 rounds through it, was about shot out. I also think that I have not gotten the parallax completely out of my scope. I can aim at any part of the sighting spot without moving my rifle. Sometimes the mirage got me so I aimed at the best looking of the fuzzy targets.
In the end, the scores were pretty close.
The September match will be on the 13th. Starting time is 10AM".
