Our own MN shooters, did very well. Stacey T. taking 3 gold medals, and 6 Bronzes, and Morgan Dietrich taking home several Bronze medals.

Bald Eagle Sportman's Assoc. , White Bear Lake, Mn will be hosting a 50 shot CMP otc Service Rifle match on Sept 12. I have shot 4 matches there over the years and each was a good time with about 12 shooters competing, If you are not traveling to Duluth for the MR range Prone matches that weekend, this is a good fun, low stress match to try that is close to home. But don't bring your ego, as there are some good shooters there that we don't normally see at other matches that can put up some pretty good scores. Juniors and Adults shot a 160 shot Small Bore prone match at Mpls. Rifle Club this past Saturday. Senior Shooter Lance Peters shot an astounding perfect score -- 1600/1600!
That's right --160 10s and Xs in a row. Great shooting Lance ! He is not getting older--just better!

The Week Ahead for shooters -- Aug 27, 2009
If you want to shoot a rifle match this coming weekend, you must travel to Lacrosse for High Power matches, or to Hibbing for Sm Bore prone. Lacrosse has an OTC on Saturday, then a Mid Range prone on Sunday. The MN State Conventional Prone (2-day) Small Bore Championship will be held in Hibbing, MN and is a 2 day match.

Long Range -- The 30 cal riflemen
A very beautiful day awaited the few long range shooters who showed up for the Rudy Wadekamper Memorial Palma matches held this weekend at GRRC. A blue bird day was the case as the shooters fired 15 shots each at 800yds, 900 yds, and 1000yds for record. The Same course for fire was shot both sat and Sun.,
On Saturday-- Elliot Zunich topped the list at the 800yd line, dropping only 1 shot out of the 10 ring for a 149 score and gaining a 3pt lead over Bob Peasley and John Andres. At the 900 yd line Bob showed everyone how to hold hard and use Iron sights at long range by cleaning that target while the others found the wind rising added to the chance of dropping a nine out the sides if they weren't very carefull. Think about what happens to a bullet as it flys 900 yds through the wind eddies. With Elliot and John both dropping 6pts, Bob layed down at the 1000 yd line now 3 pts to the good. The easy wind of earlier in the day gave way to fishtailing gusts and the 1K shooters were becomming happy to keep it in 9ring. Elliot did read that wind better than the others, taking the match from Bob by 3 pts, but that just put them in a tie for the days Agg. score. Both had shot 434 score for the day and so it was Bob's higher X count that gave him the win. Winner Bob Peasley 434-18
On Sunday John Andres started at the 800 yd line showing he wasn't giving up on the weekend by taking all the points availiable --150. Bob also held hard, giving John no reason to be comfortable, and took 150 pts him self. Elliot 4 back and John Nelson back 6. At the 900 yd line, John faded by shooting 2 nines and a x-fire. Elliot couldn't catch up from behind as Bob again fired an almost perfect score, losing just 1pt. Bob gave the others no hope at the 1000 yd line by giving up only 3 pts. The other shooters, already behind by too much, shot good, but not good enough and Capt. Bob wins with a great 446-3x.

I might note the most improved shooter was John Nelson. I pulled his target Sunday all day and I saw most shots were water line shots, X ring high. Watch out guys when John gets more wind reading practice.
Sunday,there was an uneven number of shooters so I filled in pulling a few targets.. Since there was only one shooter on the target I pulled, I got a chance to plink some rds from my almost new 6BR at the 800 yd line. As I have said before, this rifle was just re barreled and tuned up by Randal Gregory -- Accuracy Unlimited, Custom Rifles, Medford Wisc. It had performed very well at the Red Wing Mid range match dropping only 3 pts all day. I added the 11 moa to my 600 yds zero, that Capt. Bob recommended, put on a click or two for wind and fired one sighter------------------------Pin wheel X, followed by two 10s just to the left. Thank You Randy Gregory

Palma Team
Local U.S. Palma team shooters have returned from The Canadian Full Bore nationals after having shot both individual and Team matches. Steve Knutson, Morgan Dietrich, and Stacey Tamulinas were part of the US Palma team that swept all 3 long range team matches--1st place. I believe that both Stacey and Morgan also had 1st place scores in individual matches, and that Stacey also took home two Bronze medals.
I hope we can get a report from one of the guys about these important international matches and even post a few pictures.

GRRC has applied to the CMP for a Rifle Leg Match on Sunday, Oct. 4th, 2009. I've attached the program and if Minister Havlik can post on the MRRA site I'd appreciate it. If you are eligible to fire this match, less than 3 matches plus Perry come out and bring a friend.If you have fired your allotted matches you can still shoot it for practice. We will need some shooters willing=2 to be squadded w/ new shooters too.

Minneapolis Rifle Club Conventional Prone Smallbore Rifle --August 22, 2009
It was about perfect as a day could be for a match,. It was warm, sunny and the wind was calm. Fourteen shooters competed in the 160 round prone match. Shooters included two Juniors , three Sub Juniors and nine Adults. The event went off without a hitch. There was one small glitch, one of the shooter s left his rifle at the range and there was a small discussion about how long it should be hidden to make him worry. In the end kind harts prevailed and it was sent home with his friend.
When the day ended Lance Peters of Maple Wood was the match winner with a1600 -114X. That is some outstanding shooting!
Larry Sawyer of Andover, MN was high Master with a 1591-100X .
Ross Ewert won the Expert Class with a 1588 -100X.
Mike Marzitalli won the Marksman/Sharpshooter Class 1437-21X
Other honors include: Alex Gieser High Junior and Eric Hazelton was high Intermediate Junior.

"Jim,
Here's an after action report from the 1 day OTC match at North Star Aug. 16. Evening thunderstorms and early morning rain must have kept completive shooters at home Sunday morning. Only 8 hearty souls showed up for the 1 day OTC match Sunday August 16 at NSRC. Even though the paperwork arrived in time to host a NRA approved match, because of the low turnout, the decision was made to hold a 2 relay fun match. Shooting conditions started out with overcast and threatening skies. The clouds broke up and the sun came out turning up the heat and humidity. The clouds returned just in time for 600 yard slow prone to eliminate any hint of mirage making reading North Star's swirling winds a guessing game. As this was shot as a fun match every competitor kept their own scores and none were turned in. My guess is Jeremy "Mr Distinguished" Harrison won but I have no idea what his score was. I shot a somewhat disappointing 749-17 but the bright spot of the day was junior shooter Pat May shooting a personal best of 183-?x at 600. Way to go Pat! Even though I did hear a few cuss words during shooting, I heard no complaints about the match so I can honestly say everyone had a good time. Thank you to all the shooters who braved the challenging and changing conditions. And a big thank you to Mike May who ran the line and kept everything running smoothly. Even a bad day shooting is better than a good day at work. Keep them in the x ring.

I also got a note from Gary Boettger (218-739-2154) of the Fergus Fallls rifle club about their "Wahl classic Rifle Match" on Sept 13..... I'll post the program on the blog asap. It looks like they are having a 200 yd reduce OTC match and should be fun if you are in that area. It would be nice if Gary sent us a picture or two of that match.

50 meter Free Pistol
"Here are the results for the August MRC Olympic Free Pistol Match shot on the 15th. It is a 60 shot match with three 20 shot series after a sighting in period. It is shot over 2 hours. (Results) Lance Peters 532, James Reedstrom --466, Steven Stud--461, Mark Peabody --429, Michael Marzitelli --411, Joel A. Peabody --411, Arnold Olsen --392, Karl A. Studt --384.
Highlights of the day: There was a very strong across course wind from left to right which befuddled at least one shooter to no end. He was shooting in the position closest to the berm and couldn't believe is shots were grouping into the wind rather than down wind. The more experienced shooters however, in this adversity, just seeme d stronger than ever. We had two father-son teams. Each of the sons are in the process of learning their equipment being at the beginning of their mastery of free pistol. With the forthcoming air pistol season for them to further develop their skill, it will be a joy for all to watch them as they develop. --

The week Ahead
Long range shooters, both F-Class and Sling shooters have a great chance to test their skills this weekend at the Rudy Wadekamper Palma matches at GRRC. Both Saturday and Sunday shooters will be slinging lead at distant targets on the GRRC 1000yd rifle range. A Palma match is 15 shots for record at the 800, 900, and 1000 yd line. If you have at least mid range zeros on your rifle, you will not find it too hard to get on target at the longer distances. These Palma matches are good wind reading exercises, and while it's not too hard to hit the target way out there, it is hard to keep em in the 10 ring. Give it a try.

Small Bore shooters head to Mpls.Rifle Club or Elk River Sportsman's Club for prone small bore matches. The Elk River match is a Mini-Plama which includes shooting .22 prone out to 200 yds, and the MRC match is a Conventional Prone Outdoor 1600 with targets at 50yd, 50m and 100yds. Emily Quiner wins again!

Brooklyn Park Junior shooter wins National Shooting Competition

From: Larry Sawyer -- Minnesota Centershots Junior Shooting Club, Anoka, MN --August 11, 2009

Emily Quiner, 18, from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota won the American Legion National Junior Air Rifle Championship on August 9th, 2009 at the U. S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Finishing 15th among an initial field of 341 competitors from around the country, Quiner joined the other finalists advancing to the Championship match in Colorado. Her score there of 2366 points out of 2400 over the four, 60-shot matches held August 7th- 9th gave her a commanding lead of 6 points over the second place shooter going into the 10-shot final. The last 10 shots are fired in the standing position and shot as an Olympic-style event. Quiner held on to her lead over the 10 shots to secure the win.

The American Legion sponsors a nation-wide junior shooting program each year which culminates in the National Championship event. Youth eighteen and under fire .177 caliber pellet rifles in match events during the season in three positions: prone, standing and kneeling. Emily Quiner competes in the Precision class, in which the equipment is identical to that used in the Olympics. Quiner tallied an event record in the standing position of 788/800 en route to her win.

Emily Quiner shoots locally with the Minnesota Centershots Junior Shooting Program at the Anoka America Legion and is coached by Larry Sawyer. She recently graduated from Champlin Park High School and signed with Murray State University in Kentucky, accepting an athletic scholarship to compete with the Murray State Racers NCAA Rifle Team. She is the daughter of Greg and Jodi Quiner of Brooklyn Park.

Minn Service Rifle Team -- Camp Perry Report

Camp Perry 09 -- MN Service Rifle Team

The weather this year was fantastic with the temperature hovering around the high 70’s and mid 80’s. While it threatened to rain a couple of days it held off till the final day when we were shooting the Garand match and the skies opened up and dumped on us. It didn’t stop the match though! The wind was the Camp Perry usual blowing and fishtailing. Some of our new shooters had never put on four minutes of wind and that wasn’t enough at times.

Commercial Row is one of the few places where guys go shopping. It’s the only place where all of the vendors who cater to High Power are located for two weeks out of the year. All of the stuff you usually look at in catalogs is on display. Add the CMP store located just a couple of hundred yards away to list of vendors and you have the capability to empty your wallet of cash and wear the numbers off your credit card. The good news was that many of the vendors had hard to get reloading components. The bad news is the prices were a lot higher than we have been used to paying.

The shooting was great. With only a few exceptions the CMP did a great job running the matches. I can attest that all of my shots went into the Lake Erie. There were plenty of shoulda, coulda, woulda to be heard. The highlights were Jeremy, Matt, Al, and Eric got leg points. In fact Jeremy legged out and received his medal on stage. Kurt B also got a Daniel Boone medal from the NTI match. The Hearst Doubles and the team matches were exciting. Tom did a masterful job of making the target go up and down in mere seconds allowing the shooters to shoot lots of tens and X’s during the NTT (6 man team) match. The NTIT (Rattle Battle) was the usual adrenaline pumping action filled event. While the team didn’t get top honors we did score higher than the last two years combined.

Dining out was always an experience. The pizzas and burgers at Bel Mel were fantastic. Let’s say that it will be a long time before we eat any Mexican in Port Clinton. If you like walleye then the Jolly Roger is the place to go. Hard to believe but one of the best burgers was the Angus (the g is not silent) at McD’s. Maybe it was because we were hungry and it had been a long day.

One of the great things about Perry is meeting old friends. The more years you go the more friends there are to see. Given that I have lived and shot matches in MN, TX, MO, AZ, and shot matches in CA, NM, CO, IL, and OH there were a lot of people to say hello too.

You cannot help but meet new friends at Camp Perry. You get paired up with different people from across the country and stuck in the pits for a couple of hours each day. On one occasion I struck up a conversation with a young college student on the target next to me. Jen said that she was thinking about shooting the Springfield match but didn’t bring her rifle. I offered her the use of mine and she said she would try and get signed up for the match. She called me a day or two later and said that she was signing up. While the MN team was shooting the Rattle Battle she got us squadded. The bad news for the other MN shooters is they got wait listed for the match because it was overbooked. The CMP at that point decided to run another relay. Jen and I promptly volunteered to pull targets for the extra relay. Jen’s goal for the match was to get all ten shoots off in rapid fire. She shot a 98-5 slow fire and then got all ten shots off with time to spare with a 92 during rapid. I think my coaching helped. Standing wasn’t as pretty but even with a miss she got a bronze medal. Kurt B also borrowed my rifle and managed to shoot well enough to earn a gold medal. I got a gold medal as well.

This was my first year shooting with the MN team and all I can say is I look forward to shooting with the team in years to come here in MN and at Camp Perry. Kurt did a fantastic job coordinating training prior to Perry, carpooling, obtaining housing, getting shirts and hats and many other tasks. Everyone else pitched in as needed to get things done so no one person got dumped on.

As in previous years at the end of the week and on the trip home, there was discussion about what we can do to grow the sport. It would be great to have more competitors on the line at home and at the Nationals. Many suggestions were floated. I would guess that we get more new shooters from walk-ons and those brought out by friends than from clinics. So for the good of the sport bring out some friends. Find some Juniors to bring out as well. Girl-friends and wives are welcome as well, maybe not at the same time though.

5 Minnesota shooters are bringing home medals. Jeremy Harrison legged out with a gold medal 279,20 Msgt Matt Griffin legged out with a gold medal shooting a 281, Al Schneider picked up an 8 point leg with a 276-8x and silver medal. Erik Rhode and Kurt borlaug both brought home bronze medals with Erik picking up 10 leg points.

"The day was a classic summer day with the match starting at 8:45 AM. Eight shooters participated on the 50 yard competition range at Oakdale finishing by 11:00 AM. The results were as follows: Lance Peters -- 514, Thomas O'Donnell --493, Steve Studt -- 480, Jim Reedstrom --468, Mike Marzitelli--462, Joel Peabody--438, Karl Studt--376, Arnold Olsen--332.
We had a good range of shooters participating, from the old pro's such as Lance and Tom to the newer free pistol shooters Karl, and Arnie. Interestingly, we have a group of shooters who on any given day outshoot each other on a given 20 shot series making for interesting match conditions. The forthcoming state championship will be a real contest with many contenders. The next match will be at MRC later in August. September will have matches at Oakdale and MRC with the state championship match held at the end of September at Oakdale. We have room for a half dozen more competitors. "August 9th was a fine day to shoot. Warm weather, only slight breezes, and a bright day. Overall, it should have made for really good shooting; we all should have shot 600. The temperature was warm enough to fire up the air conditioning in the shooting house.

Wade Brown came back for a return engagement and promptly cleaned our clocks. All shooters we shooting F-Class which was a first for the club. The scores were pretty close. Ali was back with is favorite Tikka in 6BR. This was Adam’s first time shooting at our range and was shooting a 6BR as well. Wade had his custom 6.5x47 and I tried some different loads with my Savage .223. It appears, from the discussion, that no one shot their best and excuses were many and varied. I thought the earth was a bit wobbly while Adam was sure his rifle barrel, with perhaps 600 rounds through it, was about shot out. I also think that I have not gotten the parallax completely out of my scope. I can aim at any part of the sighting spot without moving my rifle. Sometimes the mirage got me so I aimed at the best looking of the fuzzy targets.
In the end, the scores were pretty close.
The September match will be on the 13th. Starting time is 10AM".

Long Range
US Palma Team shooters from MN -- Steve Knutson, Morgan Dietrich, and Stacey Tamulinas (and possibly Randy Gregory -Wisc) have left for Ottawa, Canada to compete and train as a team in the Canadian Long Range Full Bore championships. Ten days of shooting prone matches out to 1000yds await these wind reading and hard holding specialists. Those of us left behind can have a chance to shoot long range here at GRRC on Aug 22 and 23-- the Wadekamper Palma matches.

With a great number of Minnesota shooters traveling to and from the NRA Nationals this week the rest of us will have three "Fun" rifle matches to choose from. With nothing on the line but having an enjoyable time these matches would be a great time for any one thinking that they would like to try an "Over the Course" match ---this is the time. Pellet testing, though, showed Adam's gun to be one of, if not THE most accurate gun at the event. It's a hammer. Adam posted a personal best 581 at the match, besting his previous mark by almost 10 points. "

The week Ahead -- Aug 5th,

Shooters
This week the National Matches continue with many Minn shooters traveling to Ohio to shoot in the various shooting disciplines. This week is specifically matches for Service Rifle and Service rifle teams and next week will start the NRA matches. For those not attending the Nationals this weekend, there is an M1 Garand match at the Eau Claire Rifle Club, and a 300 m match at the Mpls Rifle Club

Note: The Matches scheduled for Elk River Sportsman's club this weekend are cancelled-- see below

But First
This past weekend NorthStar Rifle club put on the Mid Range Regional and saw 26 hard holders shooting Iron sights and Scopes in prone matches from 300yds to 600yds. Saturday was all iron sights with 15 shots at each distance. While the wind was blowing and gusting in the 20 mph range most everywhere, the shooters at NorthStar benefited somewhat from local conditions and posted very good scores. Stacey Tamulinas walked off the 300 yard line with all 200 pts on his score card and just behind by 1pt were Morgan Dietrich and Jim Soderstrom. The 500 yd line did not separate the shooters at all as three shot clean sco res of 150 -- Steve Knutson, Bob Peasley and Steve Erickson, while Stacey and Morgan both dropped pts. Leaders at the 600 yd line then were Stacey T. and Steve E, down 1 each, then Capt. Bob 2 down, and Mogan and Steve K. next. So, not letting any one catch up, Steve Erickson cleaned the 600 yd target -- the only one to shoot clean, and after dropping only one pt in the 45 shot match, Steve wins the Iron sight Mid range match.
F-Class was dominated by Ben Winget who won all three matches dropping only 7 pts for the day on that incredibly tight F-class target. Wade Brown would take 2nd but also take a 10 pt deficit into Sundays final matches.
The end of the shooting was only the beginning of the day at Northstar, as Mike May, the Club President and wife Ruth Ann, started up the barbeques. Bergers, brats, etc and good shooting stories followed. The food was great.
Sunday dawned with much better weather. Forecast for only 12-14 mph wind, blue sky, and 75 degrees------my kind of a shooting day.

This would be the first chance I've had to shoot the re barreled 6m BR that Randy Gregory originally built for me in 6.5x.284. I was hoping that the new tube that Randy put on was as good as the old one. That 6.5 was the best tack driver I ever had. Todays matches would be scope matches I would get a good chance to find out how good it is. Since I was a post entry, I got squaded with the F Class shooters, and had a good chance to watch this newer shooting discipline. The F Class targets are harder than the sling shooters targets, but those guys were still drilling that little x ring constantly. In the first match -- 20 shots at 300yds -- the new rifle barrel performed as good as I hoped. I had X ring high elevation, and was happy to get my first 200 in a while with 12 Xs. Winning score ?--nope-- only good for 2nd as Stacey shot clean with 16 Xs to take that match. Other guys with solid 200s were Elliot Zunich, Morgan Dietrich, and Steve Knutson. So 5 shooters went back to the 500 tied for the lead. In that match, Steve Knutson started a come back after being in 4th at the start of the day. He held hard --shooting all 10s and Xs for a 200-13 and gaining back 2 pts on Steve Erickson in the 2 day aggreate score . So who would win it all---they would have to win in the the last match of the weekend at the 600y d line. The wind came up a little at the 600, not strong but a little tricky, most shooters missing one or more out the left on let ups. Jerry Reitfort got in the groove with the changes and shot the only 200 in that match. Myself, Bob Peasley, and Steve K. were close with 199s, but Steve Erickson lost 4pts in that match and let the Mid Range Championship slip through his fingers by one pt. Steve Knutson had won the day with a 599-33. Close, but no cigar was myself next with 597-29, Stacey T. with 596-44, Morgan --596-28 and John Andres at 595-19. After two days of prone shooting, only 2 pts separated the top 3 shooters.
Congratulations to Steve Knutson - gold medal winner and Mid Range Prone Champion at 1042-45x pts, silver medal goes to Steve Erickson at 1041-42x, Bronze to Morgan Dietrich at 1040-53x.
On the F-Class end of the line, Wade Brown could not catch up to Ben Winget who padded his lead at each yd line by a point or two. Ben finished down only 9 for the day and only 16 for the whole weekend.
Congratulations to Ben Winget -- F-Class Mid Range Regional Champ, and Wade Bown who finished 2nd.
Great Match ! Thanks to Mike May and Ruth Ann for all the work they did, also to Gerald Johnson who ran the line and kept things safe and on track all day. The range was in beautiful shape - I'm sure that my shooting pals in AZ can hardly imagin shooting on grass firing lines as smooth as a golf course green. Eat your hearts out guys.

*Minneapolis Rifle Club Three Position Smallbore Rifle The morning of July 25, 2009 was pleasant but challenging winds! Seven shooters competed in the match. Shooters included four Sub Juniors and three Adults. The 120 round event went off without a hitch. When the day ended Lance Peters of Maplewood, MN was the winner with a score of 1074-19X. Ben Brunk of Stevens Point, WI shot a 963-8X to Claim Second overall. High overall Sub Junior was Eric Hazelton of Zimmerman, Minnesota with a score of 678-1X. Mike Manzitelli (adults) shot his first 3 Position match and seemed to have a great time. Subject: 300 Meter shoot this Sunday 10:00 AM
This Sunday, August 9, will be the August club 300 meter club match. These matches are open to the public, you do not have to be a member of either Minnetonka Game and Fish or Minneapolis Rifle Club.
Club matches consist of 60 shots and you can shoot in any of 3 classes:

3-Position (20 shots each in prone, standing, kneeling). Iron sights only, no rests. Unlimited sighters prior to each position.
Prone (or English as it is sometimes called); 60 shots in three strings of 20. Iron sights and no rests. Unlimited sighters prior to the first competition shot.
F-Class, 60 shots in three strings of 20, any sights, front and rear bags or rests but no single piece rest. Unlimited sighters prior to the first competition shot.

The fee is $15 which includes state tax and electronic target and heating/air-condition fee if necessary and is collected at the range.

Minnesota Shooting --The Week Ahead -- 7/29/09

Next weekend Minn. Service rifle shooters will be heading to Camp Perry, Small Bore shooters are returning from Perry, and Prone shooters will be heading to Red Wing for the Mid Range Regional at NorthStar Rifle club.
But First-- This past weekend saw NWGC hosting the third of their 4 match summer series. There were three 80 shot OTC matches over the Fri.-Sun. weekend making up the perfect practice for those heading to the Nationals, and a really good time for those of us who just like to shoot competitions. 22 shooters participated in some or all of the matches and saw mostly good weather all three days.
Friday's first match was Standing 200 yds as usual, and it took the steady hands of Chopper pilot Larry Weidell to shoot the high score of 192 to start things off and win that first match. In the 200 yd sitting rapid fire match , Sam Gottlieb shot clean with 9x while Kevin Bangen and Dave Salo were next with 199-10x scores. So now leaving the 200 Larry Weidel and Kevin Bangen were leading- down only 14, and next came Dave Salo down 15 and Sam at 16 down. The 300 rapid match spread out the leaders as Kevin and Dave S. both took away all 200 pts available, and Dave with 14 Xs for the match win. Sam Gottlieb dropped only 3 to stay close. With 3 shooters within 4 pts the lead, Kevin B. held hard at the 500, again shooting clean, and holding on for the win with 786-25x.
Saturday's weather looked grim and gray as I got to the 200 yd shack to sign in. It was cold enough for Dave Salo to start a fire in the barrel stove to take to chill off. Yup, it was the 24th of July and we had a fire going---it's Duluth where any weather is possible. Saturday morning's standing match goes to Kevin--189, then Bob Peasley at 187, and yours truly at 185. There were lots of solid shooters and scores in the next match -- 200 yd sitting rapid, and yours truly squeaked out a win on Xs over Kevin B. both with 199s. Going back to the 300 it was Kevin down 12, myself down 16, and Bob Peasley at 17 down for the day. Tight shooting after a rain delay at the 300 saw 199s for Capt. Bob, Sam G. , and Larry Miller. Kevin slipped back 2 with 197, but still lead at that point by 5 over Bob. Sam Gottleib gained back one pt at the 500 with a 198 match winner, but to no avail as Kevin and Omer Hamer. were right behind with 197s and Kevin winning the day with his 784-33, and taking a 12 pt tournament lead over Sam G. into Sundays third match.
There was plenty of good food, refreshments and conversation in the camp ground after Saturday's match. Bob Woods and NWGC put on a great feed -- great burgers, brats, beans and a lot of good shooting storys got told while rain came and went.
Sunday---Omer Hamer saved his best for last and shot a great standing match, taking first with a 195-4x, Kevin B. trailing in 2nd by four pts. at 191, and the rest of us hardly finding the 10 ring at all. 200 rapid saw Larry Miller, and Sam G. shoot 199s but gain little overall on Kevins lead. At the 500 Sam G. shot a 200-11x --the only 200 and again gaining a couple pts on Kevin, but Kevin's 786-28x was 1st for the day, followed by Larry Miller 779-29 and Sam Gottleib at 774-27.

"Just a few notes from the Elk River Small bore match last weekend.
On July 25th we held the 4th annual Ed Hassig Classic.
FYI Ed Hassig was a Wake Island Marine at the beginning of WWII.
I will continue to try and keep these matches informal to make sure everyone has fun.
This year we had 20 individuals show up with a fun mix of Jr's , Match Rifle & Scoped rifle shooters. From this group we had 7 Jr's with 4 of them shooting match rifles.
Leading the pack was Jeff Westbrook with a 570- 12X, Zack Church with a 533-3X, and Wyatt Thole with a 521- 4x
There were 8 more serious match shooters with the results as follows: Leo Huhta with a 595-X, and Stan Johnson with a 592- 27X. The third place tie third place was settled with an X count--Bruce Rawlings with a 588- 23 X, and Scott Olson with a 588-22 X.
These matches continue to be fun with larger turnouts each time. Thanks to those who showed up and to those who helped out."

"Minnesota will be represented again this year at the National Trophy Rifle Matches at Camp Perry Ohio.Veteran competitors Randy Allee, Tim Boyle, Phil Klanderud, Terry MacDonnell, Kurt Moline, Tom Torborg and recent Az. import Larry Weidell will share knowledge with newcomers Jeremy Harrison, Erik Rhode and Mark Schoess. Kurt Borlaug is again captain. We will be leaving this Friday and driving overnight to arrive in Ohio about 8am....Just in time to stand in line at the CMP store to pick out another M1, M1 Carbine or a case of ammo.
Sunday, Aug. 2nd will have a squaded practice where we can confirm zeroes at 200 and 600 yards.
Monday will be the President's Match.
Tuesday is THE Leg Match of the year. There are upwards of 1200 shooters at these two events.
Wednesday will be the Hearst Doubles Match and the big team matches start on Thursday Aug. 6th, with the NTT. Each shooter fires a National Match Course with no sighters.
Friday is the Infantry Match or "Rattle Battle" where each team rapid fires at 600, 500 and 300 yards. This is an exciting match to watch and many videos are on You-tube.
The team members will finish the week with individual matches. The Springfield/ Vintage Military rifle match will be fired later on Friday, with the M1 Garand Match on Saturday. About the Juniors--

I asked Larry Saywer to give me a little overlook into the local Jr. teams and shooters. Larry was kind enough to send this along.

" There are three or four junior clubs in the metro area that are actively competing, plus the two high school teams (Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, and St. Thomas Academy, in Mendota Heights. Those two shoot almost exclusively Air Rifle now as they are both JROTC and .22 in JROTC is not allowed.)
Major players are: Minnesota Centershots, my club, which ran as the Mpls. Rifle Club junior program for seven years until we spun it off last year to form an independent organization. We're a 501(c)(3) dedicated to junior shooting.

Gopher Jr. Rifle Club: Joe Showalter's gang. They shoot sporter and precision air rifle, and smallbore, often go to Perry for SB.
Post 435 CMP (in Richfield): Coach is Tim Cagney, they shoot sporter air rifle, SB rifle (.22), a little air pistol, and they have a kid or two shooting precision air rifle. Post 435 also went to Perry last week to represent Minnesota in the Sporter Air Rifle event of the USAS/CMP National J.O. 3-P Air championships. They also stayed and shot in the Air Pistol event.
Also, there is a new club called the Long Rangers, in St. Francis. It is run by some folks from Mtka Game & Fish. All new young kids, they are shooting sporter air rifle and .22. They should grow nicely over time.
The two high school teams shoot sporter air rifle, and St. Thomas has a national-level team. They shoot mostly JROTC-affiliated competitions but also some local open matches. They've ranked quite when they've gone to national competitions.

This weekend is the 3rd of the series of 4 match weekends for Northwestern Gun Club (Duluth) during the summer highpower season. Those that want to shoot a prone match near the cities can shoot the 50 yd Small Bore Prone at Elk River Sportsman's club or the NRA approved 3P Small bore match at Mpls Rifle Club.

But First
This past weekend Over the Course shooters looking for good competition went to the Eau Claire Rifle Club's Pig Roast matches and not only found good shooting, but a good time as well. Besides the great barbeque on Sat Night in the Range Camp ground, there were two good OTC matches, a 50 shot on Saturday and an 80 shot on Sunday. In that 50 shot match Sat, you would have had to have come really prepared, and shoot a 491 to win, and then you would have had to shoot more Xs than Randy Gregory who also shot 491 with 17x and then creedmore Elliot Farro who shot 491-21x like you did. Kevin Bangen did that and got the gold star for the day.
Sunday Elliot F. and RandyG. put a couple pts on Kevin in the Standing match, but let him and Sam Gottlieb catch up in the Sitting rapid match so that Kevin, Randy, and Sam left the 200 tied 11 pts down and Elliot F. back one pt. Kevin B. was not able to hold that point lead in the 300yd Rapid fire match as as he shot 196-10x to Elliot Farro''s 197-9x, and they went back to the 500 yd line tied with Sam Gottlieb all down 15pts, and Sam ahead on Xs. The 500yd line would be where the match was won. Sam's lead in the x count would not matter though as he shot 196 to the 197 fired by both Kevin B. and Elliot F.. Jim-Thought you might like some info on my junior club, the Minnesota Centershots. We just returned from Camp Perry, where the NRA held their annual National 3-Position Junior Air Rifle Championships and Training Summit from July 1-3 at the CMP's 80-firing point electronic air rifle range, right on base, just to the right of Petrarca Range. Then on July 4-6th, USA Shooting and the CMP teamed up to hold their own National Championships at the same range. Here's a short write-up:
The Minnesota Centershots/MRRA team went to Camp Perry, Ohio for the NRA 3-Position Air Rifle Championships and the USA Shooting National Junior Olympic 3-P Air Rifle Championship on June 30, 2009. The team consisted of Emily Quiner, Alex Geisar, Adam McInerney and Patrick Sunderman, who were the Minnesota State 3P Air Rifle Champion Team. Emily Quiner is also the Women’s 2009 USAS Junior National Champion in International Air Rifle, gaining the title in April at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado..........................

The Week Ahead
As I said above, this is the 3rd of 4 Northwestern Gun Club match weekends coming up and the only 3 day match of the year. Take a day off Friday and head up there to be able to shoot 3 days of 80 shot OTC matches in one weekend---all among the Balsam Firs, and Pines at NWGC along the shore of Hunter lake. It does not get any better than this. See you there?
Small bore Shooters have two choices--- the 50yd prone match at Elk River on Sat. and a three position SB match at MRC also on Saturday.

Prone shooters mark your calendars for Aug 1 and 2nd. There will be the Mid Range Championship at North star Rifle club those days. This is prone shooting (sling or F-Class) at 300yds, 500 yds, and 600yds.
