Target Shooter magazine (April Issue) has a very interesting short article on the modification and use of the Rifle Sling for Prone shooting. Author and champion shooter, Don Brook claims that with good position and using the sling properly, he can hold 1/8 min on target. See Page #81.

Robert Sandager has left the range
Robert (Sandy) Sandager passed away yesterday. Sandy was a long time member of Mpls Rifle Club, a great patron of our sport, a great shooter and an all around great guy to everyone who knew him.
Sandy was a 300 m shooter who shot on the Olympic team in 1952. He was instrumental in promoting, funding and building the 300 m range at Mpls Rifle Club-- one of only two electronic target 300 m ranges in the US. He promoted 300 m shooting right to the end and was always ready to coach interested shooters such as myself.
He also served as a officer in the US Army during WW2 and was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge --Dec- Jan 1945, a bloody battle that cost the US more than 19,000 killed in action.

Elk River Sportsman's club will host Mid range Prone and OTC matches the weekend of April 17th and 18th.
Saturdays match is a 4x20 4 gun prone 600 yd match. First two matches are Any sights and 2nd two matches are Iron sights only. F-Class allows scope and rests in all 4 matches.
Sunday's match is an 80 shot Over the Course match held at 200 to 600 yds for both Service Rifle and Match rifle.

Dave Dexter wins!
Dave Dexter showed his great off hand shooting skill by winning the State Offhand Championship held at NWGC on Mar 27th. Dave shot an amazing 780-18x in this 80 shot standing match at 200 yds to take home the Traveling Trophy this year. Kevin Bangen was 1st High Master only 5 pts behind Dave. Erick Hartley took the MA class with a 766-15x and Lorne Smith's 752-09 won the EX class.

2010 GRRC Smallbore Prone league
Gopher rifle and Revolver club (GRRC) will again host a Monday night Small Bore league. This evening league will start 5/3/10 and will continue through till 8/23/10 with firing starting at 1700hrs most Mondays (see program). League is open to all shooters, adult and juniors, GRRC members or not. Three complete 1600s will fired over the summer and make up days are scheduled. I believe that Monday or Tuesday morning shooting will continue this year for the unemployed and Retired folks. Match Director--Mark Schoess 651-357-4281 (note correction)

"Howdy Guys and Gals.
I know your patiently waiting project details for KD/HP stuff. Cliff Secord has fabbed some new point markers for the KD range. We need 2-3 people w/ stencils, paint and steady hands to number these w/ spray paint.
The big project is helping our friends on the Black Powder range with their roof project. As many of us use that range for smallbore I believe it would be nice of us to help them out. They will need shovels, rakes, nails, hammers and screw guns to get the forms ready and leveled for footings. That is the Saturday plan. Sunday will be cement mixing and pouring. We have access to one mixer that needs a generator that the club has. Water hauling, mixing and scooping. Not necessarily brain work, but deffinately a bit of skill involved and ability to take direction. If we all got on this it would go fast.
I believe that Cliff and Mark may be re-working the smallbore post holes as well.....I think. Please respond to these pleas for help with willing hands and a show of brotherhood. Remember all the work that the BP boys have done for us in the past. Our range may not even have existed had it not been for these members w/ long teeth who purchased it in the first place!"

25 shooters faced Windy and warm conditions that held down the scores but made for a great 500 yd match Saturday 3/27 at the Phoenix Rod and Gun club. Doug (Dogface) Frerich won the match followed closely by Ken (Mapleleaf) Nelson, German Salazar, and Tom (Turbo) Albinito. This Weekend -- Mar 27th
The state Offhand Championship is being held this weekend -- March 27th-- at Northwestern Gun Club, a few miles NW of Duluth. Take this chance to visit another of Minnesota's great rifle ranges and participate in this match. Shooting is from indoors to outside at 200 yds so you will stay nice and toasty warm in the shooting house--Plenty of socializing when not shooting.

Old eyes, can't see, and rear apertures
Old Eyes and Iron sights -- Part 1
It gets harder and harder to get a good sight picture, and sight allignment these days. They say that old eyes lose resolving power, and suffer reduced depth of field as one approaches 60 years old. Well, for me, that age milestone was passed years ago, and Iron sights are becoming a real problem -- and for some strange reason aperture sights are more a problem than battle sights (???).
I shot two matches this past weekend. Saturday I did very poorly in the Sm Bore Road Runner match -- lots of wild shots, off call. I just couldn't see the target. Sunday, I shot the Martin Cup 500 yd match and did quite well -- 4th, one pt out of 2nd, and I could see the target. So, what was different? Lunching with German Salazar, Mike and Tara Toliver after the match, I mentioned that today I had been using a very small rear aperture(0.9) whereas on Sat. the light must have been different as I was using a very large rear aperture (1.5). Both German and Mike said right away the large Rear aperature I used on Sat was the cause of not being able get a good sight picture and the cause of the wild shots.
I have been using larger rear apertures for years, and recently more so because I have been using a 30mm "Right Sight" on the front, and I like to have a good line of white around the front globe for the purposes of getting good sight alignment. Yes, I use the front globe for sight alignment not just the aperature. I have also thought that my real problem with "wild" shots was sight alignment and not sight picture, NPA, position, etc.
German, being the good mentor that he is, once again advised me to forget the front globe, and the concept of sight alignment, and just concentrate on the front aperture and centering the bullseye. He says to just "look through" the Rear ap, and forget about it. "If you close the Rear Aperture down to where you can barely see anything, then open it up just a little and simply look through it, you will not have sight alignment problems. If the rear aperture is really small, your eye must be centered to even see through it. The small aperture will increase your depth of field, the front sight and the bull will be much sharper and sight alignment will become automatic. On a small bore rifle--snuggle right up to the rear sight and close that aperture down to even 0.7 and just "look through it and forget it".
Well, I'm ready to try anything to help my sagging scores, so I went out yesterday to the range and tried the very small rear aperture, and yes I could see much more clearly and I seemed to have no alignment problems. The first 3 shots went in the same hole! The rest of the target went very well, and I am now ready for the first day of the Western Wildcat matches starting tomorrow.

State Off-hand Championship -- March 27thNorthwestern Gun Club (near Duluth on beautiful Hunter's lake) will be hosting the Start Offhand Championship March 27th 2010.
Less than 2 hrs north, NWGC, is a great place to shoot-- even in the winter, as all cold weather shooting is done from inside the shooting house --from shooting booths on the 200 yd line. The pits are enclosed and heated by a barrel stove so cold weather is not a problem. The shooting house is also heated and is a good place to socialize when you are not shooting. Quite often there are sausages and venison on the stove and a good time will be had by all.

Up-coming: Service Rifle Clinic
" We (Gopher Rifle and Revolver Club) are excited to announce the next Service Rifle Clinic. This year we will be implementing a new teaching format. There will be a brief classroom session in the GRRC Red Shed. We will then proceed to the 200 yard line for the practical portion of the clinic. The Clinic will be held on Saturday, May 15th, 2010 with a 7:30 am roll call. The clinic should be completed around 2:00pm.
The purpose of the clinic is to teach the Fundamentals of High Power Service Rifle Marksmanship. We will cover many topics, including sight alignment, trigger control, breathing, and equipment. The clinic will show the participant how to compete in a High Power Rifle Match; yet will be held in a relaxed and low-pressure environment. After the Clinic, the participant will have enough information to compete in
High Power Rifle matches held all across the country, including the famous National Matches held at Camp Perry, Ohio. During the entire clinic, there will be an experienced rifleman on each firing point to coach, assist and share their expertise. These experienced riflemen will also be the safety officers. We want this experience to be safe and enjoyable. Please bring a pen and notebook to the Clinic because we will be covering a lot of information!

Yes I know there is still snow on the ground and there are flood forecasts for April. But there has been a lot of interest in a NRA team practice/warm up match prior to the "real" team match in June. So by popular demand here is your program for this event. Most everyone who replied to my earlier note said they would prefer a 50 shot event. We can do a 15-30 minute review of team shooting prior to kick off if desired. This might make your new team shooters feel more comfortable.
This is just your reminder that it will happen. So get busy and start lining up your teams. Remember, club teams are preferred but state assn. teams are welcome as well as pick up teams. I'll have a follow up late April with another reminder."

Small Bore Ammo too expensive?
I recently picked up a brick of Lapua Midas L Small bore ammo for my venerable but very accurate, Mod-52D Winchester. This is a 1963 .22 target rifle that has had many many thousands of rds through it and it seems to like slightly larger dia. of the Midas L ammo. With a few other purchases I paid my bill at Brunos and noted that I was spending a little more than I thought it would be. Well when I got home and looked at the bill, I found that I had payed $16.43/50 rd box for those little rimfire bullets. Holy cow, I dont even feed my dog that good. $16 a box--- I must be nuts! Well, it is a great rifle and I do love shooting it--but $16 a box,,arrrgh!
I'm sure that you have all noticed the rise in prices of Sm bore ammo and you may feel like I do, it isn't worth it---because it isn't, unless you are a High Master shooter that can expect to shoot a 1600 on a good day and win the Western Wildcats match. Well, I'm not and I don't so I'm not going to lay out that kind of money for "The Best" ammo. I am starting to believe that there is lots of good ammo out there at much more reasonable prices, so I am now shooting SK and Wolf ammo---$4 to $6 per box and I think I am getting just as good scores as I would with the "really good" stuff. With me, it aint the ammo that shoots most of those bad shots, it's my old eyes and lack of skill.
On a good day I can get in the 1590's with a scope (1598-105x last time) and average 1571-70x with irons weather its $16 per box or $4 per box--- so why pay too much for ammo.
Can $6 ammo shoot well--see below. That's a 100 yd metric target from the last metric match I shot with iron sights. Other than one called bad shot the group is about 1 min of angle. Good enough for me and I think that it would have been half that with a scope and a rest.

With me, it aint the ammo that shoots most of those bad shots, it's my old eyes and lack of skill.
On a good day I can get in the 1590's with a scope (1598-105x last time) and average 1571-70x with irons weather its $16 per box or $4 per box--- so why pay too much for ammo.

PGRC Small Bore 1600 --2/28/10 Die hards in the rain
The day was chilly and overcast with some rain. Up against the Seinor Olympics 500 yard and the Vancouver Olympics we had a rather small turnout. Richard Layton had a great start but found fowling a problem later in the day (time for a new barrel already on order). Jake Crown a new Junior had a wonderful first day out. Bob Del Cotto came down for some practice before next weeks One Day Regional.

Sandy's match
" The Minneapolis Rifle Club hosted the Robert Sandager 60 Round Offhand Match at it’s range in St. Francis, Minnesota firing on the 300 Meter International Target. Robert Sandager graciously donated the prize money! Twenty shooters from the region entered the match and shot in metallic and any sight match events. Several shooters only shot in one match so a total of 25 scores were marked.
Over the two days many good scores were shot but the top gun was Larry Sawyer. Larry shot an impressive 538-8X using metallic sights.; Second overall high score was shot by Lance Peters using a scope shooting a fine 522-6X.; Dave Dexter shot the third highest overall score of 517-5X using a scope."

Infantry Team load
State Service Rifle team Capt., Kurt Borlaug, is in the process of choosing a standard load for the State rattle battle team to use this summer at the National Matches. He is thinking that a load of approximately 24gn RL-15 behind either a 77 SMK or a 75 Hornady will be chosen load for all team members to use. HP Rifle Clinic Feb 20th
"The 2nd annual high power rifle clinic hosted by North Star Rifle club at Gander Mt, lakeville was attended by 20 shooters. this included about 5 or 6 NorthStar members, and 4 or 5 shooters who knew nothing about high power shooting but are serious about trying it. Member Bob Peasley rand the clinic and was assisted by Kurt Moline in demonstrations of the various positions. After the clinic the attendees enjoyed Pizza supplied by NorthStar Rifle Club."

Club vs Club warm up match
Are you on a team yet? Does you club have a team yet for the Club vs Club team warm up match on May 30th ? As all who were there last Sept. know --the Club vs Club mid range team match was the best match of the year. This year the first club vs club team match will be May 30th and this match will be an Over the Course match, either 50 or 80 rds (not decided yet). Every club is on notice to get their team (s) organized as the challenge has been issued to compete for club bragging rights. There will be no All Star Teams, made up of ringers from multiple rifle clubs, so it is a true club vs club match and each club does have a chance to place and brag about their clubs. We expect to see teams from NWGC, Northstar, GRRC, MRC, Elk River, LaCrosse, Eau Claire, Bald Eagle, Post 435.-- so talk it up, organize early, and remember: If your club isn't there, it can't win. The worst losers are the ones that don't participate.

Note: this past Sunday, Desert Sharpshooters hosted the 118th annual Washington's B-day match at BenAvery, Phoenix. This annual 4 man Service Rifle team match is is the longest continuous running rifle match in the nation (118 years in a row). It's all held at 200 yds on reduced targets to save time. 55 teams showed up-- some to compete fiercely but most just to have fun-- M1 teams, Springfield 03 teams, A4 carbine teams, NG teams, Junior teams, and a couple commercial teams (Accuracy Speaks won again with Phil Hayes, Tom Albinito, Jim Evenson, Wayne Ulrich and yours truly won the "Old Fart" plaque). This level of participation shows that team matches are the most fun or the people would not show up year after year. Team matches generate interest within the clubs and promote shooting participation for club members. So, High power division chairmen get busy, organize those teams. Let's have some fun.
Iron sight Optics
This morning I talked to Allen Elliot, and had him order me a .3 diopter for my 30mm Right Sight. Allen said that the new diopters came mounted in a little carrier that screwed into the front of the sight instead of sliding in and being held in by the nylon o-ring as the older ones are held in.
This immediately made me think that moving the diopter forward one inch might have consequences, such as in changing the focal distance to the front Aperture. Of course, I was incorrectly assuming that the diopters are designed to focus the image at the front ap plane. Then I brought this up with Bill Luth and he said that a diopter is the reciprocal of the Focal length so that a .3 dio has a focal length of 30.03", and a .5 has a focal length of 26.24".

If this is the case, then should we not be adjusting our sight radius to the focal length of the diopter so as to have the image as sharp and focused as possible?? It is always evident that the bullseye seen through a .3 diopter appears to be much sharper, and blacker than a bullseye seen through a .5 diopter. ( Size of image being irrelevant). This seems to bear out the fact that a .3 diopter focuses at 30 in and that is somewhat closer to our sight radius on most guns these days.
Maybe this whole business is irrelevant because what we really want is to examine the image (exit pupil) that is larger because we are examining it forward (or aft) of the focal point, and thus, of course, it is out of focus. Maybe the image through a .3 diopter examined at 30 in. would apprear the same as one examined through a .5 diopter at it's focal point of 26 in ?????
None of the above brings in to play the effect of two apertures placed into the line of sight between the diopter and the eye. Now-- as far as optics go, the "diopters" that we use are " convex-concave positive" lenses. The optics rule that applies is that "when the distance to the image (target) is more than two focal lengths, then the focused image distance behind the lens will be less than 2 focal lengths. Formula: B=FxA/A-F so F( 30" .3 dio) x A(200yds)/A(200yds) minusF (30in) = 2.5ftx 600ft/ 600ft-2.5ft =2.51ft == 30.12". Therefore if we examine this image (with our eye through a .3 diopter) at any other distance than 30.12 inches it will be out of focus.
I am meeting with Bill Luth this afternoon to discuss setting up an optical bench to further examine this issue. Stay tuned.
