"Hi All:
In an effort to increase International Small Bore shooting I have come up with a revised match format for the last match small bore of the summer season.  Saturday, September 28, 2013 we will shoot a 3 X 20 3-Position match starting at 9AM.  After lunch we will feature a 600 Prone match starting at 1PM.  All targets will be shot at 50 meters on the a-50 target.  Entry fees are modest and you are welcome to shoot either one or both of the matches.  The match program is attached.

Please note: NRA prone shooters are welcome to shoot the prone match using your existing equipment.  Seniors may use any sight for these events

This is a trial run and will be shot under NRA Authorization.  If this works out well, there we  be a couple of these matches offered in the 2014 shooting season under USA Shooting authorization using ISSF Rules.

Mid Range Regional Championship at Northstar -- This weekend!

"Hello players:

The NRA medals for the upcoming regional arrived today.  I also got 2 more entries today bringing us up to over 30 by my count.  We have about 10-12 F class and the rest sling.  The weather looks mighty nice both days but maybe cool evenings & early morning.  North Star has about 4 picnic tables but if you have a lawn chair to use for eating & relaxing you better bring it. President May is planning on a pulled pork BBQ with salad, chips, beans? & water.  Feel free to bring your favorite adult beverage or soft drink.  For those of you in Rio Linda "beverage" is something to drink..

If you have not yet sent an entry please do so ASAP as I would like to have 90% of the squadding done Fri. night.  I will be arriving at the range by noon Fri. & the gate will be open.  I don't have cell phone or email there so email your entry by 0900 Fri.

 "Attention HP shooters!! Kurt Borlaug is once again stumped by his computer and can't open, write or send documents via e-mail. He wants you all to know that October 5 and 6 will be a beehive of Highpower events at GRRC.
  Saturday the 5th will be the Bob Hall make up. 80 shots, BUT!!!! as this is an unapproved match you will be allowed to stand prior to rapids. Why is that of interest? Because we'll have an EIC Leg match on Sunday! 9am start both days, squadding by 8:30 and pits seal at 8:45.
Fees are $15 for Saturday and $20 for Sunday.

Shooters News for the Minn Area -  Sept. 10, 2013 

 The Week Ahead

  Mpls. Rifle Club is once again the focus of the shooting community this weekend. Mark Rohmann and his Highpower crew has another great weekend of shooting lined up for Over The Course shooters starting off with a 100 shot OTC match on Saturday Sept 14.  The first two matches of the day will be the Standing match ( 20 shots offhand) and the Sitting Rapid Fire match (two strings of 10 shots, each fired in 60 sec).  These matches are fired from the MRC's shade covered 200 yd line. Shooters then move back to the 300 yd line for the Prone Rapid fire match, and then two 20 shot Prone Slow fire matches.  That's right, you get to double up on prone slow fire and we all need more practice at that. 
 Then after the match, the MRC guys will host another of their great Barbeque throwdowns for all the shooters.

The Minnesota State Offhand Championship will be fired Sunday, Sept 15th, at MRC. Competitors will fire 5 matches of 20 shots Standing to determine who will be the 2013 State Offhand Champion. Good shooting conditions at NWGC and top talent again showed on the score board. After 160 shots for record, Stacey T. had fired 100 Xs, and dropped only two points. Thats right Stacey fired six of the 8 matches Clean including the last 5 matches in a row, and dropped only one pt in ea of the other two matches. Congratulations also to Steve Knutson, State Champion, just a couple pts back with another great performance and a 1594-93x score. Congrats also to Wick, Eric, Omer for their outstanding shooting at these prestigious matches.
    I see that the list of champions here is full of Sm Bore prone shooters -- take note.

The Week Ahead

This is it --  the matches you have been waiting for are happening this weekend at Northwestern Gun Club, near Duluth. It will be two days of Mid Range Sling State Championship prone matches.  Usually known as the 9/11 Memorial matches.  These matches draw many shooters to the north woods just for the chance to shoot at such a nice rifle range. Each year shooters come from states around to compete in both 300 and 500 yd matches at this great range on the shores of Hunter Lake.  Saturday, Sept. 7th will feature Iron sight and Scope matches from the 300 yd. line. On Sunday, Sept 8th, shooters will move back to the 500 yd line for another day of both Iron sight and Any sight matches.  So gather up 160 rds plus a bunch of sighters and come on up for a weekend of trigger pulling.

300 Meter International
Mpls. Rifle Club invites you to their monthly 300 m International match -- Sept 8th. MRC is in NW Anoka county, and has super neat electronic targets.  Check it out.

The September Minneapolis Rifle Club 300 meter match comes early this month.  Since the 1^st of the month was last Sunday, the match will be held this Sunday, September 8 in keeping with the schedule of the monthly matches held on the 2^nd Sunday of the month.  There will be two relays scheduled; the first goes off at 10 AM and the second at noon.  

  Register yourself at http://edfpages.com/mgfc/match.php.  Read the instructions.  Pay attention as you fill in the boxes and make selections from the drop down lists.  There is room for only 14 shooters per relay.  The box at the top of the list shows the number of shooters for each relay. 
    No expanding or fragmenting bullets.  Only match or full metal jacket bullets; no muzzle brakes but flash hiders are OK.  A-Max bullets are NOT allowed. They are fine for paper but have a jacket that will fragment and shred our targets when it hits.  
  Pick your shooting class: 3-Position, Prone (sling and iron sights), Offhand (iron sights), F-Open or F-TR.  If you use optical sights then you are in one of the two F classes, depending upon caliber and type of support used.  You can shoot F-TR class with a service rifle with a scope and a sling if you choose.  F-TR is limited to .223 (5.56) or .308 caliber and may use a bipod attached to the rifle (but not a front bag or rest).  F-Open is any other caliber or rifle support.  Shooting is governed by ISSF rules except we allow NRA shooting jackets.  As a club match, we have some liberty.

   Fee is $20 for the 60 shot match; Electronic targets, so, NO PIT DUTY and the match runs quickly, 3 strings of 20 rounds in succession.  Once the command is given to start the match, each shooter is on their own to finish within the 1:35 minutes.  
  If you need to cancel or change relays you have to contact me so that I can use the magic pixie dust to delete your entry and make it available for someone else.
   If you make an error on your entry, contact me so I can correct it.

"Yesterday a young man named James Wendel, who had reached out to Jim Hahn only two weeks ago, came out to try competitive shooting for the first time ever. James brought along and AR-10 and a Remy 700 in .308 to try his hand at the fullbore course and under the watchful eye of past palma team member and new Arizona resident Grant Ubl, appeared to have had the time of his life. I'm fairly certain we will be seeing more of Mr. Wendel as we progress into the cooler months. Also big thanks for helping out with not only the new guy, Grant, but for your dedication to the sling and F shooters in our community since your arrival in July. This has not gone unnoticed sir and we all owe you a debt of gratitude!"

"Hello belly shooters:
Attached is your program for the MRP Regional at North Star Sept. 21/22.  Here are a few points for your consideration: 

1. We can accommodate 60 shooters on 3 relays or 80 on 4 relays if necessary. 

2. F CLASS is big & growing so we expect more F CLASS shooters.  However, we will limit F CLASS & Sling to 30 or 40 entries until NOON WED. SEPT. 17.  After that time we will fill spots with whatever the demand is.  So if you want to ensure a spot PUH-LEESE read the program and send advance entry.  My instinct tells me we will probably NOT exceed 3 relays but we never know. 
3.  President Mike May is planning on a BBQ after the team match Sat.  We will be requesting a $5.00 donation to help offset food cost.  Therefore I also request you include a statement with your entry that you will stay for BBQ so we know how much stuff to order.  You can pay when you eat. 
4.  It's getting dark early by late Sept. so it's important to start on time.  Your advance entry will help with that!
5.  We would like to see club vs. club teams but if you can't find guys from your club we welcome state association teams. 
6.  I don't have a full list of F class shooters so it would be nice to see you F class guys spread the word. I'll add those names to my North Star DB for future reference.

From La Crosse to Eau Claire, the action stays in Wisconsin this coming weekend. After practicing up last weekend at the La Crosse Rifle club mid range matches, traveling shooters will again be heading east for this weekends Mid Range and Over the Course matches at the Eau Claire Rifle Club.  Both Saturday and Sunday (Aug 31, Sept 1) shooters will have opportunity to fire 4 prone matches of 20 shots ea. from the 600 yd line at the Eau Claire Rifle Club's shooting facility a little north of town on the banks of the river.  Click here for Match bulletin
  Over the Course shooters get their chance on Monday, Sept 2.  Two Service Rifle matches are on tap for folks to enjoy.  First off is an John C. Garand match in the morning. Competitors will fire CMP course B from the 200 yd line -- a 50 shot match with prone slow fire first.  Click Here for Match bulletin.

Last Weekend 
Congratulations to Larry Sawyer -- the Minnesota State Prone Champion with Small Bore rifles.

  We were all glad to be shooting from shaded firing positions this weekend at the Minn State Sm Bore Prone Championships.  It was hot. The competition was great, but it was hot.  Thanks to George Minerich we had a couple fans to keep the air moving in the MRC sm bore shooting house.  With a cool drink in between targets, it was even pleasant. I would not have wanted to be out in the sun shooting all day.  Thanks again to George for running a great Championship -- as he always does.

    While we glad to have the air moving in the shooting house, we could have used a little less wind between us and the targets.  With an 15 mph average wind from the left, and gusts to 23 mph, there was enough wind for everybody.

    We started off Saturday's Iron Sight matches with Junior shooter, Eric Hazleton firing a clean score with half Xs winning the first match. The second match saw the wind at full bore and switching 180 deg every few seconds.  Larry Sawyer found a good shooting window, stuck to it, and won the DeWar match going away, and gaining good lead on the field. Emily Quniar held steady for 2nd with a solid 396-23x. In the 100 yd match it was Erick Hazleton who was the most patient with the reversals and gusts, dropping only 7 pts to take that win and take point from Larry Sawyer's lead.  Young Eric followed his disciplined shooting plan of mostly watching the wind and waiting for the opportunity to use good technique at the right time and won the match. By this time, I had found out that I hadn't shot all my bad shots last weekend and I was fading fast from the leader board. In the last match, the 50m match, Emily Q. made a run for the lead as she and Stacey Tamulinas traded 10s and Xs, shot for shot, untill Emily pulled ahead for tough win in tough conditions. In the end, Iron Sight day at the prone champs went to Larry Sawyer who fired a 1583 with and amazing 100 Xs.

 Day two at the prone champs saw many shooters switch to scopes as this was Any Sight day.  Most of the juniors and Emily Q., former NCAA competitor were content to contest the matches with Iron Sights only.
    No quarter was given in the first match at 50 yds.  Larry, Emily and Stacey T. all fired clean scores with Stacey a couple Xs ahead.  Stacey, 6 pts behind the leader in the weekends aggreate score, and Emily, 3 pts back were not ready to give up yet.  Stacey made his run in the Dewar match, again shooting clean for the 40 shots, in the gusty wind to pull back 3 pts on Larry S..  In the 100 yd match Larry padded his lead by one pt. by scoring 398 while Eric, Stacey, and Emily scored "only" 397s and a pile of Xs.  Larry's 399 in the 50 m match was a winner by a point, but not good enough to win the day's Any sight Championship.   Stacey's steady shooting (1595-119x)  gains him First place for the day, with Larry back a few Xs. 

   Adding up the weekends aggregate, the congratulations go to Emily Q for a well deserved 2rd place, and to Stacey T. for a hard earned 3rd over all for the weekend.  Top Junior prone shooter is Eric Hazleton, who continues his race to the Master Class. Congrats to Elmer Miller, a Grand Senior and new shooter who fired his new Personal Record score of 1540 on Sunday.  Elmer is definitely getting it figured out.

Sorry I didn't get a report in to you sooner.  Been busy catching up after 13 fun filled days of driving & shooting.  Feel free to report the following next report if you so desire.

    I coached the US RIFLE TEAM PEASLEY in both 1000 yard team matches & the Palma team.  The shooters were Steve & Shirley Mcgee from Kansas plus Leo Cebula from Detroit & Bud Solis from Seattle.  The team shot Palma rifles all the way.  Steve has been suffering some bad back pain so was a couple points off his normal outstanding scores. The team shot a ho hum 782X27 in the Roumanian team with over half the points lost to coaching error. I hate it when that happens! This score would have been good enough to break the  senior metallic sight team record of 779 but for the Pete Church team shooting a 790!  Next day in the Herrick match we picked it to a 790X31 good enough for 3rd among the teams shooting Palma rifles.  The team posted a 1772X59 in the Palma team match (450 each shooter).  This was high civilian team, high senior team and 2nd overall. We got beat by only the pros from the US Army who averaged about 35 years younger!  Here is the link to Palma team scores.

 We showed up at US RIFLE TEAM MCGEE because the real captain (me) forgot to write RIFLE TEAM PEASLEY on the card.  Over half the 28 points lost were coaching errors again.  But if they will have me I'll do better next year including the team name!

Need a good inexpensive digital caliper for your bench? If so this weeks Did you Know may be of some assistance. Last month I was in Harbor Freight looking for some polishing materials and spotted a whole shelf of these calipers. (see attached picture) At the time they were marked down to $15 bucks so I thought what the heck. When I got it home and opened the box I was surprised to find a very well made instrument. The fit in the slide area is very tight and it comes with a spare battery. I now use it for all my reloading related needs. The even better news is that yesterday I received my September Rifleman and there on page 20 something is a Harbor Freight add with a coupon for this caliper that knocks the price down to just $10 bucks. So if you need a spare for the bench or one for the range box you just can't go wrong for very little money.

2013 Western CMP Games & Creedmoor Cup Matches

Registration for the 2013 Western CMP Games & Creedmoor Cup Matches is now open online.  The 2013 Western CMP Games take place at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility from October 11-October 15 and the Creedmoor Cup matches are held from October 15-20.  You can register for the Western CMP Games by clicking on the following link: http://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=matchRegistrationLogin.  To register for the Creedmoor Cup matches please visit the Creedmoor Sports webpage at   www.creedmoorsports.com.

The Week Ahead      
  Traveling shooters who are still ready to go even after long trips to Camp Perry, will be heading down the river to LaCrosse, Wisc this weekend for a Mid Range match.

   Those Multi-talented prone shooters that are left behind will be heading to the Mpls Rifle Club this Sat and Sunday for two great days of top prone shooting competition at the Outdoor Prone Sm Bore State Championships. Saturday, Aug 24th, shooters will be firing the Iron Sight matches all day, and on Sunday, Aug 25th, shooters will compete using 'any' sights.  Each day the matches will start with the 50yd match -- two targets, 20 shots ea at 50 yds.  Most High masters expect to clean this easier target with a good X count-- 34 Xs might be good enough to take the lead.  Then comes the DeWar match and that means another 50 yd target and one at 100 yds. Now things are getting serious. This is a tough target to clean.  If your position, trigger control and wind reading is not "perfect" on the 100 yd target, you will not get a 10 (don't even think about Xs).  In the third match -- the 100 yd match-- you will find out weather you are good prone shooter or not. This match is two targets at 100 yds, and the wind can mess you up big time.  I'm always happy to get off the line in the 100 yd match with a 395-20x and that won't win the match. The last match is the 50 meter match (or the Meter match as it's called) -- two targets at 50m.  This match is easy to shoot as the targets are a little closer and even old eyes can see good through Iron sights, but this match is very, very hard to excel at.  Only the best of the best prone shooters will clean this target.

      Since there are no High Power matches this weekend in Minnesota, I was wondering if you would please forward out the attached MN Small Bore Prone Championship Match Program to your shooters list.  I am pretty sure that there are a lot of High Power shooters with Small Bore rifles needing exercise!  It’s a fun match with a lot of shooting – 160 rounds a day.  It is a very good way to work on your prone skills.  100 yards in the wind at the Minneapolis Rifle Club range is a special treat.

 Last Week 
Highpower OTC
Mpls Rifle Club hosted the 3rd weekend of their summer series Highpower Over the Course matches over the weekend and was blessed with the great weather we all expect in Aug.  I don't have a match report, but Match Director, Mark Rohmann sent us some results.  
   It looks like Erik Rhode is still on a tear and once again had the top score both days with an . awesome 780 on Sat and a 771-20x on Sunday.  Not far behind in the weekend's agg, was Jim Soderstrom, who came from behind on Sunday to take a well deserved 2nd place. Just a few pts back from Jim was Jim Fernandes, and up and comer from the Duluth whose scores continue to improve match by match. It was good to see Phil Carlson out at a match again after a couple years hiatus.

"Elk River Sportsman’s Club held the 1^st Annual Midwest Mid-Range Championship this last weekend.  As match director, I wanted to give a special thanks to all that made this event run so smoothly.  Mike Miceli and John Clausen both did a great job running the line and keeping all the guys out of trouble.  If you had seen who showed up you would understand.  Just kidding, we had a great group of guys shooting both days.  A total of 25 shooters shot four matches each day.  The weather was great both days, but the little bit of wind we had made for some tricking shooting at times.  Gary Boham was the “Pit Boss” and did another great job down there getting the targets up and down and repaired.  One of the range attendants even helped out pulling a few targets.  Thanks to everyone that helped make the tournament great. Thanks to ERSC for letting us have this event, and thanks to the Gun Stop for sponsoring the event.  There was some remarkable shooting this last weekend by everyone.  The scores have sure changed over the last couple of years.  There were ten 200 scores and a lot of 199’s and 198’s.  And lots of X’s.  It was a great weekend with a lot of great shooters and friends.  Thanks to everyone, and see you at the range.

Tks Rick for that Report.  I know a lot of the guys were out at the F-class world Championships in Raton, NM this past week.  I hope we get some good news from out that way.  I did get this note from F-classer, John Chilton.
 "Great first day of the USA F-class Nationals is in the bag, Shot my first clean at 1000yds this morning   150-7x. ended up 2nd in the Agg. today dropping 8 pts for the day. Thank you Sawtooth Rifles for a great gun"

Small bore At MRC
It was a pretty good turn out this past Sunday at the MRC SB 1600 even with most folks being burned out from the Nationals.  Long time Gallery shooter, Bill Roos was there working out his favorite M52B Winchester.  While we were trying to shoot a 10 on the 50 meter target from the prone position, Bill was shooting Standing, and using his Unertl scope.  I can't even imagine what my wobble would look like through a scope, standing, on that target.  My hats off to you, Bill.

    Jason Jarvis and Nick Learn

  Jason Jarvis came down from Fort Francis, Canada on his annual trip to shoot with us Southerners.  Jason runs the Prone in the Wilderness Blog when he is not shooting, working, or coaching his Cadet Sm bore team.
   

The 50 yd match went to Emily Quinar who did indeed clean the target with 34 Xs, while every one else dropped 2 or more pts--- that is except Sub Junior, Norman Lilyerd who watched the switchy wind better than the rest of us and fired a 399-25x.  Again in the DeWar match, it was Emily who showed us how it is done, winning with a 398-25x.  At this time Jim Biles started getting rid of all those bad shots he had saved up at previous matches -- matches that he didn't shoot any bad shots in.  Jim got rid of 15 more of those bad shots in the 100 yd match for a new personal low record score. Jim said "well that's done, now I can get back to some good shooting at next weeks State Champ match"  I also got rid of good number of bad shots in that match, so I'm looking good for next week also. By this time Stacey Tamulinas had settled into 2nd place a few pts behind Emily.  I finally shot clean on the on the 2nd target of the Meter match so I got to go home happy as I have only cleaned the Meter target very few times in the 100s of times I have shot that target.  I didn't win the match though because I got rid of 3 more Bad nines on the first target and Stacy took that match with 6 Xs more than I had - 397-25x,  -- awesome score for the tough target and the wind that was changing 2 or 3 times a minute. That's his target above (nice groups!)   Good shooting on the last target wasn't good enough though as Emily had whipped us all like a rented mule throughout the whole day and earned the Match win with a great score of 1590 and 107 Xs --- that's right 107 Xs, 43 tens, and 10 nines!. She does it shooting Irons when the rest of us are shooting scopes for half the match.
  Stacey came in 2nd with a 1585-96x.  Your's truly got the 2nd loser spot, another 6 pts and a bunch of Xs back.  Junior shooter, Nick Learn was nipping at our heels all day and will be passing us by sooner than later.  (I think that kid has grown a foot since last summer)

     Brian Mrnak did an awesome job in the Palma Championship match.
The winds were out of the NNW and very switchy which really played into Brian strength, wind reading.
When people like Nancy Tompkins and John Widden are dropping 5 points at 900, (Widden shot 2-8’s) Brian is staying ahead of the wind and  dropping only 2.
Brian cleaned 800 and went to 1000yd only 2 pts down.  Again the winds were brutal on everybody but Brian kept it all together and only dropped 2.
I was scoring for Brian and we both knew this was going to be a very good score for the day.  When we heard Green and Cooper both shot 445’s it looked like Brian would take the whole thing.  Then we heard about Hendricks’s shooting a 446-26X which bested Brian by a few X’s.  It wasn’t until we checked the official results during the challenge period did we find out Hendricks used an 'ANY' rifle and Brian was the National Palma Indiviudual Champ.  It was a great day for Brian and fun to be part of it. 
Shirley McGee also ended up High Woman and 4^th overall in the National Championship Agg. 
Brian Mrnak (446-18x)  and Stacey Tamulinas (444-14x) both made the Palma 20 as well.
I managed to take 15^th in Leech Cup and 20^th in Wimbledon Cup (Shooting IRON’s sights  along side the scopes for a 199-10x!) 
Morgan Dietrich (200-10x) was 10^th overall in the Band of Brothers Trophy  
Capt. Bob coached some teams but not sure how they ended up.
