The Week Ahead -- May 26, 2009

Shooters
The Week Ahead looks North to Northwestern Gun Club on Hunter Lake
But First --- Last weekends fine weather offered good opportunities to shoot competitively. There were Over the Course and Mid Range matches at ERSA and Championship Small Bore matches at MRC ---- for me the choice was the Small Bore Prone Regional at Mpls. Rifle Club. It was two days of great shooting in great weather. It was 160 shots for record with iron sights on Saturday, and then another 160 record shots Sunday with "any" sights.

There were 18 competitors--about 6 juniors, 2 or 3 seniors, 4 or 5 high power shooters including former NRA Long Range Champion Randy Gregory,, Matt Girffin - Air Force Reserve service rifle team,, Minn. 1000yd Champion Bill Lair, and Junior Emily Quiner who has been chosen to join the American Olympic Development team and is leaving for training in the Chezk Republic next week. Emily trains with Larry Sawyer and the MN Centershots. Other Juniors that train with B. Blahut have their own web site at-- http://longrangers.us/Home_Page.php I believe there were some Jrs from the GRRC club also. Bill Lair shot his first prone Small Bore match in years and said he'll be back for more.

After the first two matches at 50yds and 100 yds, Emily and Morgan Dietrich were tied at 796 with Xs. In the final two Ironsight matches, at 100 yds and 50 m, Morgan lost only two more points winning the first day with a 1594 +100 Xs on a very tricky windy day. On Sunday, the wind was lighter -- all most perfect conditions, for the Scope matches. Four people took advantage of the good conditions to shoot perfect 400s in the 50yd match -- Randy, Morgan, Emily, and Greg Quiner. In the Dewar Match (50 and 100 yds), Randy Gregory did it again and finished on top at the half way point with no points lost ---an 800-57x. Even with 6 pts to give from Saturdays match, Morgan shot straight, dropping only 1 pt in the last 80 shots for a 799--56X. With the wind and mirage changing every minute, this was a great performance.
Gold Medal to Morgan Dietrich. 2nd to Steve Knutson and High Junior to Emily Quiner.
Never to get enough----right after the Matches Sunday, Randy G, Steve K., and Morgan D. left for Lodi to shoot a Palma Match on Monday.

Elk River Matches -- May 23 and 24, -- Late news ----
Results for Saturdays OTC match are posted Below. Kevin won the first match --the Standing Match with a 188-1x. Phil Klandrude came back and won the Sitting Rapid fire with a solid 199-9x. After that it was all Bob Peasley who took the 300 yd rapid fire match with 199-7x and also the Prone slow fire 600 yd match with a 197-9x. It wasn't enough though to pull ahead of Kevin Bangen who held on to be MatchWinner by 4 pts over Captn. Bob.
Sundays Mid Range prone matches were rumoured to have been won by Stacey Tamulinas, followed by, Dale Wickstrom and 3rd to Captn. Bob.

The Week Ahead:
I am also looking forward to this coming weekend-- Saturday morning ride up to Northwestern Gun Club to shoot my first OTC match this summer. I probably enjoy shooting matches at NWGC more that any place else---smell of the pine trees, or the barbeques, or the lake behind the 500 yd line---something. There will be Over the Course matches both Sat and Sun. I'll get out the .223 AR match rifle, I got enough ammo made to shoot at least Saturday.

The week ahead offers great matches to participate in.
But first ---the 1000 yd Regional was held last Sat and Sunday---very windy and trying conditions tested the long range shooters skill on Saturday during the Iron Sight matches. Gusty tail winds switching from one side to the other forced patience on the trigger pullers if they wanted to stay in the middle. Scores were down some what, but still some very good scores were posted. Stacey Tamulinas finished on top for the day with a fine 60 shot Iron Sight score of 579 and 17 Xs. Mathew Griffen topped the Master Class and beat all the other High Master shooters for 2nd over all with a 575 and 15 Xs.
Sunday saw pleasant temperatures, and just a nice SW breeze to test the Shooters for the remaining "any sight" matches. Stacey lost points with a cross fire in the first match, but still led Bill Lair by 3 Xs going into the final 20 shot match. Both shooters dropped only one pt, in the first 10 shot string but Bill Lair shot a 4 X-99 to Stacey's 2 X-99. So going into the last 10 shots, only 1X separated the two possible winners. Bill dropped 2 by shooting an 8 on the 15th shot, but Stacey shot two nines in a row, then two more nines while Bill shot only one, and Bill took home the 1000 yd Gold medal, while Stacey got the Silver. Elliot Zunich took home his first medal from a Regional by winning the Bronze. Congratulations to Bill Lair and all the competitors. The favorite caliber---6.5mm x .284 win.
Gary Lavalley, the manufacturer of the fine Phoenix Precision rifle sights, won the F-class award.
Pictures from the 1K Regional are posted ---BELOW

Nice range, and good folks to shoot with--Barbeque after the match Sat--I think so. It's a couple hr. drive North, but it's worth it. Camp at the range. There's even showers.

The Week Ahead -- 5/12/09

  • Shooters
This weekend ahead favors prone shooters. Saturday and Sunday is the 1000 yd regional. GRRC is hosting a great opportunity to shoot Long Range. With only one 1000 rd rifle range in the state, and actually in states around, It isn't all that often that everyone gets a chance to shoot long range. This weekend we do. Saturdays match is 60 shots prone with Iron sights (3 ea 20 shot matches with sighters). Sunday is scope day (any sights) and I think 2 ea 20 shot matches plus sighters, then a 4 person team match. Most any center fire match rifle is good to go. Some of the teams will be "pick-up" teams, -- so anyone that wants to get on a team with coaching can do so. F-class allows and encourages shooters to shoot scope with rests or bipods and is a class that is becoming very popular. You can enter one day or two days. I wish my 6BR was ready.........
    GRRC location----- http://mrra.org/images/maps/gopher_map.gif

Small bore news: For the second week GRRC had a very good turn out for the Monday evening league. 17 shooters the first week, and maybe even 20 this past week. Four shot in the morning relay which starts 0930 and most shot the 3;30pm to 6:30 relays. larry and Jonell Sawyer shot the top two scores in this weeks 50m match. Gordy Kordowski came to the morning relay and shot his first match in 12 years. I assume that a few muscle aches will follow. I think that Gordy was shooting a nice M-52 Win.
    300 m Match--- no news.

Thursday -- May 14 -- GRRC High power practice
    Friday -- May 15
-- Possible 1000yd practice at GRRC
Saturday -- May 16 -- 1000 yd Regional at GRRC (day 1 ) Iron sights, 60 shots, unlimited sighters
Saturday -- May 16 -- Rim fire Sporter Small Bore (25yds and 50 yds) at Elk River )
Saturday -- May 16 -- 2700 Bullseye pistol at MTGF, or 50m Free pistol at MRC
Sunday -- May 17 -- 1000 yd Regional at GRRC (day 2) Individual scope and team match
Sunday -- May 17 -- 2700 Bulleye Pistol at Oakdale Monday May 18 Small bore league at GRRC
Monday -- May 18 -- F Class at Elk River
Monday --May 19 -- High Power summer league at Northstar

    Looking ahead 2 weeks:
The weekend after next has something for both prone shooters, and Over the Course competitors.
May 23 and 24 -- Small Bore Regional, at Mpls. Rifle Club, with a 1600 scheduled for each day. Iron sights Saturday and Any sights on Sunday. If you are a prone shooter, you won't miss this one.
May 23 and 24 -- Elk river has an 80 OTC lined up for Saturday and a Mid Range prone on Sunday.

Note : -- Camp Perry plans: From-- Kurt Borlaug
Boys, I am inquiring to all of you about Perry for Service Rifle Week, August 3-7th. In short are you going?Who are you riding with? Where are you staying?I have made a reservation for one room for two and a cottage for eight at the Erie Island Inn. Real close to Perry and there is a pool and a golf course (shorty). About $300 for the week of August 1st through 7th am checkout. We need at the very least eight shooters for the team matches on August 6 and 7. That's for two in the pits on 6th, no shooting but you get paid. If you know someone who is planning on going but not on this header (Phil Klanderud) please let me know by phone their intentions. (651)263-4576. June is filled with Leg Matches in Mn. First, third and fourth weeks are legs. Lots of re-scheduling led to this situation. Great warm-ups for Perry. Thanks, Let me know soon .

The Week Ahead May 6th

Shooters
The week ahead includes the Appleseed Rifle clinic at Elk River Sportsman's Club. This is a rifle marksmanship clinic that stresses traditional American style shooting--- basic equipment, basic ammo and hitting the target out to 500 yds. See program: http://www.appleseedinfo.org/

You can also participate in a 300meter precision prone rifle match at Mpls Rifle club. These matches are shot on the Swiss Ascor 300 m Electronic targets -- a very advanced system. You actually shoot 300 m, but view your shot placement on a computer monitor next to your firing position in the shooting house. If you haven't tried this, it's really a treat to shoot these matches and not even have to pull targets

Thursday -- May 7th GRRC HP practice
Saturday -- May 9th Appleseed Rifle clinic at ERSC
Sunday -- May 10th Appleseed Rifle clinic at ERSC
Sunday -- May 10th 300m Rifle match at Mpls Rifle Club
Monday -- May 11th GRRC Evening Small Bore League
Tuesday -- May 12th Elk river evening High power league -------
Looking ahead:
It's only a week ahead till the 1000 yd Regional at GRRC. May 16th and 17 will be the dates for Long Range shooters to save for both the Iron sight (Sat) and Any sight (Sun) 1000yd matches. These matches are also open to F-class shooters both days. You should come with good zeros for Mid Range, and you will get on target. Give it a try!
Bullseye pistol matches also May 16th aned 17th with 2700s at MGFC & Oakdale. Free pistol 50m match at MRC on the 17th.

Note 1: This past Monday saw the beginning and first shots downrange in the GRRC Small Bore league. The newly constructed small bore range at Gopher has nine level grass firing positions, and targets at 50 yds, 50 m, and 100 yds for shooting traditional "prone conventional outdoor" matches.
The first match saw 17 shooters participate in the 50 yd portion (40 shots for record) of a std. 1600 pt match. Next week shooters will fire the 50m match, then the following week will be the 100yd match and the Dewar after that. We can all thank Kurt Borlaug for all the hard work organizing this league, and Cliff Secord (et al) for range construction.

Note 2: Pic (above) from first GRRC evening Small Bore league match
Note 3: Pics from Local Matches, and results of those matches will be posted here as I get them from match directors, and participants. I would like to post any and all shooting news, pictures of new guns and general shooting gossip.----send it to ARman772@aol.com Remember, the purpose of this blog is to Promote shooting sports---lets do it!
Note 4: from Matt Griffen
I would like to add that Elk River has a Tuesday evening highpower league that starts at 6pm. We have this league every Tuesday except for the third Tuesday of the month because of the club meetings. May 5th will be a 600 yard practice and then we will start over again at 200 the following Tuesday. Throughout the summer we will shoot at 200, 300, and 600 enough times to complete three 80 shot matches by the end of September. It would be great if you could include this in your schedule. You can contact Tim Thole for a schedule if you like.
Note 5: Would anyone like to share a box a box each of 50m and 100yd small bore targets--contact me. I would like to order some soon, but really don't need a whole box for myself.
Note 6: Link to Complete expanded 2009 schedule below has been repaired.
